The Mariposa Grove of Giant Sequoia Trees, near Yosemite’s south entrance, contains about 500 mature giant sequoia trees, perhaps the largest living things on Earth. The oldest Yosemite giant sequoia may exceed 3,000 years in age! Among the most popular specimens in the grove is the Fallen Monarch which is made famous for an 1899 photograph of U.S. Cavalry officers on their horses up on top. Another must-visit tree is the Bachelor and Three Graces. This beautiful cluster is a very popular spot for photos. However, the most famous tree in the grove is the Grizzly Giant, one of the largest trees in the Mariposa Grove and, at an estimated age of 2,700 years, one of the oldest living sequoia. Beyond the Grizzly Giant sit hundreds of lesser-visited sequoias in the upper grove including the Clothespin Tree, the Faithful Couple and the fallen Wawona Tunnel Tree. Reaching the upper grove is a longer hike with elevation gains, but well worth the exercise! https://www.yosemite.com/what-to-do/mariposa-grove-giant-sequoias/

Fresno Flats Historic Village and Park recaptures the flavor of 19th Century life in the Sierra Nevada foothills and mountains of Central California. Eastern Madera County is the southern end of the historic Mother Lode gold fields, but the people who settled here came not so much for gold but more to build their lives and raise their families, making their living as farmers, merchants and using the rich natural resources of the mountains. The museum complex is built around two restored and furnished homes dating to the 1870s. Both have been designated by the State of California as Points of Historical Interest for their unique construction styles once common throughout Northern California, but virtually unknown today. They were saved from demolition, moved to Fresno Flats Historical Park and restored by the volunteers of Sierra Historic Sites Association, as were a pair of early-day one-room schools, two 19th Century jails and several other farm buildings.

Local Entertaintment

In 1967 a group of community members decided that Oakhurst needed something to get the tourists driving through town on their way to Yosemite National Park a reason to stop (and spend money) in our Mountain Village. With the help of the current Chamber of Commerce, the “Golden Chain Theatre” was born. Performances were held at the Oakhurst Community Center, and the theme was – 19th Century Historical theatre and Melodrama. The community took immediate pride in the newly- formed troupe, and soon, it was obvious the players were outgrowing their space, and were ready for the next step — they needed their own building. In 1972, the founding board members took a big chance each putting their own houses up as collateral to purchase the Snowline Bowling Alley, and convert it into a theatre. With unparalleled vision, this dedicated group re-vamped the old bowling alley, converted the lanes to an auditorium, “downdated” the Saloon, installed a few gift shops, and opened the doors. In 1999, the Board of directors announced at the annual Awards Night Banquet that the final payment on the mortgage had been made — the Golden Chain Theatre now owned it’s facility outright. It’s 2020 and we continue to grow, develop and improve. Golden Chain Theatre is dedicated to bringing its patrons the plays and musicals they want to see, along with keeping our tradition of Summer Melodrama and Traveling Shows part of who we are. In its 53rd season, GCT is thrilled to present a wide variety of quality live entertainment, promote fine arts education and to make a vibrant contribution to our community’s economy, culture and spirit.

Hiking & sightseeing

From a yelper: "This was a really cool hike! I was worried because I went with my family (young siblings age 7 &9), and I wasn't sure if they would be able to handle it. THANKFULLY they loved it. It was very easy and we saw no mountain lions! The waterfall was also very pretty and the water was fresh to touch. 10/10 recommend if you're in the area. (It's an easy hike overall!) also, DO NOT USE THE YELP DIRECTIONS!!!! If you have the app maps from an IOS device use the directions from that app."

easy hike to the nice oasis.... you can go more to the top of the falls if you want, theres another deep pool but we stayed on the bottom deep pool. Rocks are very slippery, wear watershoes with good grip otherwise you will fall and it will hurt a lot! Bring bathing suit, towels and easy dry clothes. Bring floatie! Water is Always cold here but in the summer the hot sun helps. Bring sunscreen, shades and snacks but take your trash with you! Theres a parking lot that fits about 6 cars only. Trail goes to the left of the parking lot.

A nice, short hike for those who want to have something to do before or after checking into the hotel for your Yosemite trip. The trail is uphill for about 20-25 minutes at a moderate pace, before going downhill slightly. There you will find "Glass Rock" where there is a lot of natural rock seating for you to enjoy the lake view. If you time it right, you can enjoy the sunset here, but make sure to bring a headlamp to assist with the return trip since it will be pretty dark by then. The hike uphill is grueling enough to make you squirm a little bit, but rewarding with a great view and seating. This area is really remote, with only a few road-side parking spots. To spot the "trailhead" look for the trail right next to the cut up logs. The trail is in average condition. Hopefully people can take better care of it by carrying out their own trash and adhere to "no trace" exploring.

"I have the simplest of tastes, I only want the best." These words, compliments of Oscar Wilde, can be found over the kitchen door at The Elderberry House Restaurant on the grounds of Château du Sureau. Think twice-baked potato casserole, mac and cheese, locally sourced organic salad greens, and our famous jumbo sweet potato.
