We highly recommend Altamont Gardens as a way to spend a few hours wandering through beautiful formal gardens and wild woods leading down to the river and up 100 stone steps set in the hill or take the winding easy route back up. Take a picnic, there is a Supervalu on the hill out of Bunclody where we get filled rolls and cake. Altamont is free with only a carpark charge of €2. Entrance to the gardens is on the right of the main house driving in.

20 mins drive away is Mount Leinster its stunning views are incredible. The gated walk on the left of carpark coming up from Bunclody is very very steep whereas the right hand hill is perfect for families. Bring a picnic and a jacket it gets very windy but the views are beautiful. Be careful of the steep windy road there are pull over spots to allow cars to pass.

6km away is the Historic Ferns Castle. Pre covid the free tour took you inside the castle and up to the roof but now there are outside tours run by the amazing Larry who is a font of knowledge and so friendly and the tours usually last 10 mins. The visitor centre has an amazing tapestry woven by local people depicting the historic events at the Castle. Just across the road you can get snacks drinks and ice creams and sit on the grass for a picnic before visiting the rest of historic Ferns.

Kilmore Quay, County Wexford, Ireland A trip to the Saltee Islands is a popular day out. It is advisable to book your place on the ferry well in advance, especially during the peak summer months of July and August. The Saltee Islands are one of the most recognizable landmarks of the south Wexford coastline. Just 5 km from Kilmore Quay, the islands are home to an array of seabirds such as puffins, gannets, guillemots, razorbills, fulmars, manx shearwater, gulls as well as many other species of wildlife. The gannet colony on the cliffs at the Southwest corner of the island is one of the three main colonies found in Ireland. A wonderfully wild landscape, the islands are home to a wide variety of flora and fauna. Bluebells cover the islands in early summer. The path from the landing point leads you to Prince Michael’s throne and obelisk. Old stone walls dot the landscape, a reminder to times past when the islands were farmed by its inhabitants. A Special Area of Conservation, the islands are a unique place to visit.   Bookings can be made by sending a text message to Declan on 087 252 9736 Daily Departures (subject to weather and seasonality)  Please confirm your departure time when booking Other times by arrangement Ferry Departs from Kilmore Quay marina Note: There is a chance your feet will get wet at the landing point – please bring appropriate footwear or be prepared to remove your shoes and go barefoot. Chang Thai is situated inside Treacys Hotel Templeshannon Enniscorthy. Check opening times but its usually open from 5.30pm till 10pm weekdays except closed Monday and Tuesday. Weekend opening times are usually 5.30pm till 11pm. The Waterfront Carpark is directly across the road €1 per hour but I think the hotel validates the carpark ticket. Our group of 10 was aged from 80 to 2 years and the food was just the right amount of spicy and savoury and it was plentiful. There is a nice atmosphere and the staff are very nice and helpful. We popped across to the Hotel Bar afterwards to have a drink and there were Irish traditional musicians playing which was lovely as some of our group were from Germany and they really enjoyed the session.

Adventure

Curracloe beach is beautiful very long and we go there to swim and to surf. The Winning Post is the only shop/takeaway/Arcade at the beach and at the side is The Surfshack. Book online or call them as the timeslots fill up very quickly. Get there 20 mins beforehand and the staff will help with picking a wetsuit and shoes. All wetsuits and shoes are disinfected and are clean. You are put into groups with 2 or 3 staff and head to the beach. After being taught the correct way to stand and move on the board you take to the water and the fun begins. I cannot stress enough how great the staff are with everyone they encourage and push the boards so you can get up and running. If the sea is flat we go sand boarding down the large sand dune or SUP paddleboarding. Or why not go swimming at dawn and watch the sunrise.

Book online with Go with the flow at €30 per person. We just tried the Clashganny to Graiguenamanagh canoe trip booked for 10.30am for 3 hrs and it was with 3 people in a 3 seater canoe. Don't worry if theres no one there when you arrive as its just the carpark and he will arrive at the very last minute. There are toilets and changing rooms. We wore our wetsuits but long leggings and long sleeve tshirts and old runners would be fine. I wore a helmet as I had a go pro mounted on it but theres no need for one. Be sure to wear bug spray take some with you and spray it around the canoe. Its fine on the wide stretches. There is a canal lock about 10 mins in.You have to get out at the wooden deck and lift the canoe out with the rope and carry the canoe around the lock back into the water but its not too heavy and you can rest and take your time. Going downriver was fun and took about 50 mins, follow the arrows to ensure you do not go on the weir, we enjoyed beautiful scenery and arrived to Graiguenamanagh village. It is very picturesque. We tied up our canoe to the rail at the stone steps and walked down to the cafe to sit outside and have a drink. They are used to wetsuits. Then we returned to start back upriver this was harder but satisfying. Theres no rush really and when we arrived back we lifted the canoe out and left the canoe on the grass. We had a great day and we will try the 6 hr St.Mullins stretch next but there are 5 locks on that!

Clonmines Pony trekking is just after Wellingtonbridge village and its a lovely way to spend some time. Some of the photos above show our group we had a 7yr old who had never been on a horse and 2 teens. The trainer took the 7yr old on a lead rein for 45 mins through the forest walk and taught her the basics and she was so nice and professional. The teens went on the beach ride for an hr and really loved it again the trainer was really excellent informative and professional. The area is wild and beautiful and when the tide is in is incredible. Its popular so try book ahead of time. We did ours in the afternoon after visiting Hook lighthouse and Tintern abbey in the morning as its only 20 mins or so between them. Text John to book your place/s +353861737873

Let Susan and her team of experienced and qualified kayak Instructors guide you on a scenic kayak tour of the River Slaney, which is not only stunningly beautiful, this tidal area has also been recognised as a Special Area of Conservation for its diverse wildlife. The tour starts just across the river from Edermine House which was built by Sir John Power of Powers Distillery fame and home of a private chapel believed to have been designed by AWN Pugin. After a quick intro to the equipment and a brief lesson in how to handle the very stable kayaks we head north along the river towards Enniscorthy following the Wexford railway line which was described by Michael Palin as one of the most beautiful short train journeys in Europe. Once passed the remains of Browns Castle, which was almost completely destroyed by Cromwell and his men in 1649, we leave the Slaney crossing under the railway line to meander our way up the little Boro river. The Boro is just off to the side of a small woodland, many of whom’s trees have found their way into the river over the years after high winds. Take time to enjoy your surroundings and listen as the song bird’s guide you up the river.  On a good day sharp eyed visitors can spot the Kingfisher before he takes off, flying low to the water and resting at his next fishing spot. There is a huge abundance of wildlife from heron, otters, water hen, ducks and a curious grey seal is often spotted fishing on the high tide. The whole tour is 4km long and runs at a leisurely pace with plenty of rest stops along the way.
