Playa Guiones is a very unique surf beach. It is ideal for beginners, it is ideal for intermediate surfers, and it is ideal for expert surfers. Contrary to most other surf beaches around the world, Playa Guiones tends to have no surf season, instead surf is typically great year round. It is a rare day when you cannot surf in Guiones.

Although Ostional is known around the world for its turtle nesting, when turtles are not arriving or being born you are allowed to go surf there! The surf is a bit more intense and so only recommended for advanced surfers. Only every now and then will you see a longboarder there.

Best to coordinate tours with the MTB bike shop next to Gilded Iguana. You can also ask them for access to the mountain bike park which is only 10 minutes bike ride away from the house.

Turtles come to lay eggs every month in Otional! Baby turtles then hatch around 14 days after. That means you might be able to either see the arrival ("arribada"), or birth ("nacimiento") of turtles when visiting. The majority of the turtles that come to nest are the Olive Ridley sea turtle but leatherback and pacific green turtles can also be seen during certain months.
Turtles come to nest all year long at the beach but there are certain times of the year where you can see hundreds of thousands of turtles all come to hatch their eggs at once. This period of time is called an arribada, which means arrival in Spanish and it only occurs in a few spots in the world. The biggest arribadas occur from July – December and November generally sees the biggest arribadas. This arribada occurs in 8 beaches in the world and 2 of them are in the Pacific coast of Costa Rica (Nancite beach in Santa Rosa and Playa Ostional). Ostional Wildlife Refuge is considered as the site of the most reproduction of Olive Ridley turtles in the whole world. They come to shore to lay their eggs usually right before a new moon when it is the darkest.
