Ljungskile was a popular bathing and spa town for many decades due to its climate, which was claimed to be balmy. Even though the town is now much more than a spa resort, it still offers relaxation, activities, and good food throughout the year.
Experience the balmy climate
It was the combination of pine forest and sea air, as well as the protected location in the straits between Orust and the mainland, which was said to make the climate in Ljungskile rather special.
The charming town is only one hour away from Gothenburg and stretches along the bay, with the grand Bredfjället mountain on one side. The name comes from “ljung”, or heather, which was once the name of the parish, and “kile”, meaning bay.
To the forest and mountains:
Despite its small size, Ljungskile offers nature experiences of distinctly different kinds. For those who are keen on hiking in the woods and fields, the Norra Fjället farm offers an excellent starting point to the hiking and recreational area Bredfjället. The farm, which dates back to the 1600s, has been the center of Ljungskile Outdoors Club since the 1960s and the starting out point for several trails in the area. The mountain offers, among other things, woodlands and old agricultural landscape with cottage ruins and traces of old farms. There are both coniferous and deciduous forest and if one follows Tjöstelrödsbäcken from the Skarsjöarna lakes and below, one finds Silverfallet - a fifteen feet high waterfall very close to the outlet of Little Skarsjön. There are outing-friendly fields with well-marked trails and tracks, perfect for both day trips as well as longer hikes. One can take their evening swim here in one of the glassy forest lakes or walk along the ancient round place fence.

This is an excellent spot to bring your kids for a day out. Enjoy free pony riding, a petting zoo with rabbits, hens, goats, and more. There's a good picnic area with space for grilling, swings, sandboxes, and slides. Additionally, there are several paths in the forest, including one that is wheelchair accessible.

Where to swim? We would like to recommend Saxenhov as the best place and in walking or biking distance. It is popular with families as the water is shallow, with plenty of space to play or to light a grill.
