Sightseeing

If you take the Cape Greco road as you pass Protaras, you can follow the winding road that takes you through the National Park conservation area and take the left turn down to Konnos Bay – a superb, secluded bay, excellent for snorkelling. Cape Greco itself, whilst not a beach, is an excellent viewpoint and offers some stunning views of the coastline – by boat, you can explore the sea caves around this headland. The white sand around the coast here reflects the sun, giving the sea a brilliant blue colour. Some of the more adventurous dive from the cliffs into the sea!

From the viewpoint you can see Varosha which is the abandoned southern quarter of Famagusta. Before 1974, it was the modern tourist area of the city. Its inhabitants fled during the Turkish invasion of Cyprus in 1974, when the city of Famagusta came under Turkish control, and it has remained abandoned ever since.

City/town information

Protaras is the name of a large, picturesque bay (known as Fig Tree Bay) running along the Paralimni coast, where a sweeping white sand beach eases into the crystal clear water of the Mediterranean. Fig trees do actually stand on the beach. All types of water sports are available and there are some of the best beach-side tavernas serving traditional Cypriot food. In recent years, due to development, the whole tourist area of Paralimni Municipality has been called Protaras. This extends for approximately 10 kilometres beginning in Kapparis and ending in the south in the Konnos area near to Cape Greco. There are many superb beaches along this coast; Ayia Triada bay, Vrysoythkia bay, Pernera bay and Konnos Bay to name a few.

Ayia Napa also has some of the best beaches in the area. Nissi Beach, (actually a couple of minutes drive out of the town) is the best known, with shallow, sheltered water, bungee jumping and DJs in the beach bars, giving an all-day party atmosphere. Around the recently re-developed harbour in Ayia Napa town, you will find more good beaches, a variety of bars and some excellent seafood restaurants. The majority of the wild nightlife in Ayia Napa happens in ‘The Square’, which is tucked away at the top of the town, leaving the lower town largely unaffected. You will find numerous guidebooks, maps, bus timetables etc in the box under the table lamp by the sofa’s.

Great beaches

Fireman Beach is one of the nearest to the apartment and is about a 15 minutes walk. Turn off Kennedy Ave down the side of the Twilight Bar. If you pay for a sunbed you get free wi-fi on the beach. Next door to Fireman’s is another beach which is often quieter but no wi-fi available. A path cuts between the two beaches.

Food scene

A few of the bars and restaurants that you will find in Kapparis main street ‘Kennedy Avenue’. Faliros Restaurant – Steak, Grill and Meze. Excellent traditional Cypriot restaurant that I strongly recommend. Wooden Crest – Pub/Bar with good reliable Cypriot and pub food Just Italian – Excellent contemporary restaurant with quality food and wine. Excellent food but perhaps a little pricey. Superb pasta, pizza as well as many classics. Mambos - bar and restaurant. Pig & Whistle - a friendly bar restaurant. Captain Karas – Great Meze with excellent locally caught fish a speciality. Another favourite. Tony’s – Cocktail bar and restaurant, family friendly. Seafood, meze, steaks etc
