Food scene

Although a small town, St. Andrews has quite a vibrant food scene. It has fantastic fine dining options such as The Seafood Ristorante, The Grange Inn and The Adamson, all of which appear in the Michelin Guide. Among the many other high quality options, I would recommend Forgans, The Rav, The Doll House, and a visit to Balgove Larder to shop, grab a bite at their cafe or the Steak Barn, to name just a few. Very noteworthy mentions for a more relaxed bite would be St. Andrews Shwarma, Tainon Thai Street Food, CombiniCo for fresh and healthy Japanese takeaway, Gorgeous for tea and cake, Cromars for great fish 'n chips, CombiniCafe for good coffee, and I could go on, but these are a good place to start :) OMG, almost forgot, don't forget to spend an hour in line outside Jannetta's Gelateria!! Last but certainly most important in many opinions are the pubs....The Keys Bar, home to a 180 malts is a don't miss, The Vic is very cool, Whey Pat is a great traditional Scottish pub, and the no frills The Criterion may be my personal favorite, as many locals would concur. Slightly further afield is the renowned Michelin starred Peat Inn (Cupar), and tucked away in Anstruther is another Michelin starred gem, The Cellar, both of which are fantastic fine dining options, but if its a fish supper you're craving, you can't beat the Anstruther Fish Bar. Try not to miss out on the elusive, excellent and hard-to-get-a-seat-at East Pier Smokehouse in St. Monans! Its a no fuss, no frills, comfortable, friendly and fantastic place where you can feast on the food as well as the view! Last, but in no way the least, is my personal favorite, about a 20 minute drive away from St. Andrews, in the tiny East Neuk village of Kilconquhar, The Kinneuchar Inn. The chef's creations are masterpieces, everything on the small menu is amazing, and if you've never imagined what feta cheesecake with poached apricots and marcona almonds could possibly taste like, go ahead and imagine.....it's better!! :). Go.

Considered the oldest golf course in the world, and set right against West Sands Beach, it is definitely worth a visit.....or at least a drive by on your way to the beach!

Needs no introduction, but I swear every time I go, I hear the "Chariots of Fire" musical score in my head and feel the need to run in slow motion....ha ha!

A string of fishing villages that must not be missed. Crail is crazy pretty, the sunset in Elie is magical, the fish 'n chips at the Anstruther Fish Bar can't be beat, and the puffins on Isle of May off St. Monans....puffect??

A "must do" aka "don't miss" if you're into walking/hiking, stunning scenery that takes your breath away (literally!), and idyllic little fishing villages of the East Neuk. Walk a mile or 20, your call :)

Simply amazing. It is vast, has something to captivate everyone, be it the coastal landscape, the incredible birdwatching, hiking, canoeing, watching the seals resting on the sandbanks or trail walking…whatever you choose, you’re gonna be one tired but happy puppy at the end of your day out!

Considered a key site for wintering waterfowl, including a large population of pink-footed geese, Cameron Reservoir is a must visit for the birdwatching enthusiast. Beautiful circular walk around the reservoir takes you through various habitats of the local wildlife. Afterwards, I recommend heading straight for a watering hole for the two legged, say, The Criterion? 😂

NOT for the faint-of-heart, those with a fear of heights, or sweaty palms!! If you're still reading, maybe you're up for the challenge? For half a kilometer (not sure what that is in miles:)) you're "walking" (more like scrambling) vertically up or down, and horizontally like a crab, hanging on to a metal chain, wondering why you didn't let your partner go alone while you waited for him at the local pub......but then, when you take a deep breath and look at the glory surrounding you, you'll be glad you didn't chicken out! A truly one of a kind (white-knuckle!) experience.

Stunning in its scale and beauty, this 12th century ruins is an awe inspiring sight, especially on a glorious day. It is considered to be the largest church to have been built in Scotland. I walk there most every day and never tire of seeing it.

City/town information

Falkland is a magical little medieval village, perfectly preserved, lost in time and one of my absolute favorite places to visit in Fife. If you're an Outlander fan, this is a must stop on your pilgrimage! For the history nerds, Mary Queen of Scots played tennis on the oldest court in the world at Falkland Palace, a gorgeous example of French Renaissance architecture. Lomond Hills Regional Park is nearby for the outdoor enthusiast, for walking and hiking - climb West Lomond for the stunning views! For the rest of us, its a picturesque village to wander about and spend a happy few hours that you'll file away in your good memories folder for always.
