Neighborhoods

You will be approximately 3 miles back into the Elkhorn Mountains once you arrive at the house. Our property sits right near the end of private properties and where nearly 200,000 acres of public lands begin. The Helena National Forest boundary is literally at our back property line. Or you can travel another 1/2 mile up the county road and cross onto public Forest Service lands. Most all types of wildlife that live in Montana call these mountains home. This area is famous for its trophy class bull elk which are commonly viewed right from our front deck or even in the yard at times. Black bears, mountain lions, coyotes and all variety of smaller critters frequent out neighborhood. Grizzly bears and wolves, though more rare, do pass through these mountains as well ( these two top predators are not known to frequent the immediate neighborhood around the house, but tend to hang out in the back country). Warm Springs Creek Rd, makes a beautiful loop drive through the western edge of the Elkhorn Mountains providing some wonderful views of this amazing ecosystem. The Elkhorns are largely roadless, so getting deeper into the wild is going to require a good pair of hiking boots and a willingness to burn some serious calories. Just what many nature lovers adore about this area. There are more roads that can get you into the higher places over on the North and Eastern edges of the mountain range. We'd recommend obtaining a copy of an Elkhorns Travel Map to locate those roads. Here is a link to Forest Service overview map. https://www.fs.usda.gov/Internet/FSE_DOCUMENTS/fseprd533853.pdf Hard copies with better detail should be available through the US Forest Service. There is an established Trail Head further along Warm Springs Creek Rd, called Willard Creek Trail. It has large signage and easy to find. It is approximately 3 to 4 miles further on up the country road beyond the house. Some absolutely beautiful country back in there. Worth the drive at least. If you enjoy mountains, wildlife, nature in general, we believe you will absolutely love our neighborhood.

Samgöngur

Personal vehicles are best.

During the warm months regular passenger cars work fine. If snow, AWD or 4WD are a near must. Be aware, GPS mapping apps are commonly inaccurate when you get up into our neighborhood. Be sure to check written and visual directions to make sure you get to the correct house. Our driveway is somewhat steep and tight around the backside of the house. Please do not attempt to drive large RVs all the way up to the house. Ordinary cars, SUVs and pickups should have no problem.
Hvað á að taka með

Hiking shoes, binoculars, cameras, backpack

If you're planning to hike into the forest and back country, please make sure you know your limitations and have suitable hiking equipment, water, food etc. This is bear country and it is recommended that you carry Bear Spray, keep it close at hand and know how to use it. Bear issues are extremely rare, but its best to be prepared.
