This place has the BEST baked spicy lion king roll and bacon fried rice...actually all their food is great. You typically don't need a reservation for the regular dining, but you will if you want to do the Teppanyaki Bar. This is in Porterville about a 20 minute drive west of our place.

This is a short, easy 1 mile trail about a 10 minute drive from us right behind the Success Dam (Richard L. Schafer Dam). It has informational plaques about the local flora and fauna and information about the Dam. There's picnic areas with shade. Kind of a hidden gem. Not many people know about it so it's typically very quiet. *Check to see if it's open. Recent flooding may affect access to this trail.

This is a lovely place to have a picnic, enjoy the Tule River, take pictures, go for a swim or ride a natural water slide (The water is super cold snow melt--cold is nice in the Summer, but not so much any other time of year). You can also hike/boulder scramble upstream. There are picnic tables. The day use fee is $10. Summer and winter hours vary. You'll want to arrive early as there is limited parking and it fills up quickly in the summer. *Check the Sequoia National Forest website to see if it's open. KAYAKING / HIKING to the Old Magnesite Mine. If you're really adventurous, in the summer months when the water level is high you can rent a Kayak and paddle up the South Fork of the Tule River from Lake Success to the Old Magnesite Mine. As you paddle up the South Fork you'll see old mine shafts on the West facing mountains. It can be challenging to get to the mine stacks as the river gets thick with debris and vegetation. Sometimes we have to park the kayak and hike / slog the rest of the way. You also may encounter cattle who free range and come down for water. We've never had a problem with them but they're big and curious and a little intimidating if you aren't used to being around them. It's not easy to get to but it's very interesting to explore. Not many people know about the old mine.

*Search All Trails reviews for the Alonzo Stagg Tree hike to see if it's open. Recent fires may have road closures. The Stagg Tree is in the Alder Creek Giant Sequoia Grove in Sequoia Crest. It's about 1hr 15min drive to the trailhead from our place. On the drive up you'll see the devastation from the 2020 fires in this area. Fortunately most of the giant sequoias survived the fire.
