These are the 'hidden gems' of the neighborhood. Most of them you wouldn't pass a sideways glance, one is in a residential neighborhood, another has massive brew kettles in the parking lot and one looks more like a fire station. Give them a try and begin your trip by visiting places with names you do not recognize (non-franchise)
Can easily accommodate large group or a sojourn from your trip that needs some privacy and local fare.

Starbucks? You just arrived in Portland and you want coffee you can get anywhere on the planet? The trick with Portland is these gems are not necessarily on the map. This is a classic 'In The Know' find. One of my favorite distinctions beyond the coffee and friendly staff: you will overhear conversations ranging from college students, financiers, developers planning the next megalopolis and a clutch of new mothers.
Plus, you can rent a fantastic meeting room with full AV and comfy couches for $50/hour and FREE if used by a non-profit! Check the website to reserve.

You just traveled how far and at what cost? You have heard about Portland culinary deliciousness? This pizza is #1 or #2 in the city! It IS going to be more expensive... because it is good. This is not "Mozzarella in a Bread Bowl Chicago Deep Dish". Think perfectly crisp, thin crust that can only be created in a wood fired oven. Think subtle flavors you can independently taste. It is only 3 miles away, and have the driver stop at John's Market and buy beverages. Believe it or not, this rusty little market, semi creepy on the outside, houses the best bottled beer selection in the state (might not be accurate but feels right).

John's is one of the few places you can buy "Hair of the Dog" local beer. The local favorite, "Fred" is a Barley Wine? It is a highly potent beer (10%+)with high hops and high flavor. Sample of bottle of Fred and a sample of Ruth --- Ruth is made with what is left AFTER a Fred run!
