Sightseeing

The Sandwich Bay Observatory is located on the Kent coastline in the Sandwich and Hacklinge SSSI, the large floodplain of the River Stour that nestles between the White Cliffs of Dover to the south and the Isle of Thanet to the north. It is the base for the ongoing work of Sandwich Bay Bird Observatory Trust, which has been recording all aspects of the wildlife of Sandwich Bay for over 50 years. There is a programme of weekly events for members and non-members including walks.

There is also a weekly street market on a Thursday morning in Sandwich high street (9.00am till 3.00pm) Fruit and vegetables and local produce can be bought.

Deal Farmers Market

Deal also has its own market in the Town Hall Undercroft on a Wednesday and Friday (9.00am- 1.30pm). Here you will find a variety of traders selling meat, homemade cakes and pastries, bread, cookies, preservers, biscuits, plants and crafts such as paintings, mugs, postcards and driftwood items. Deal also has a larger weekly market every Saturday morning in the Union Road carpark from 8.30am till 3.00pm.

Trains & Buses

Train Station: Sandwich Train Station Trains run regularly from here to London (St Pancras) – the fast train takes 1.5hours. Services also cover Ramsgate and Margate. Buses There are bus services to Walmer, Deal and Canterbury from Sandwich (bus number 13A). Journey time to Canterbury is approx. 45 minutes and services run regularly from the Market Square. Timetables are located in the Sandi Lodge information box.

Boat Trips

A scenic trip up the River Stour to spot seals or to visit the Roman Fort are just two of the trips you can take from Sandwich. Alternatively, there are regular fishing trips from Ramsgate harbour that take you out into the outer parts of Sandwich Bay. You can then catch your own fish for supper! Rods and bait are provided.
