Sightseeing

Saint Peter Claver, Human Rights Pioneer, Cloister and Church For almost forty years, this Jesuit Priest worked in Cartgena de Indias, defending, protecting and nursing newly arrived African slaves. The Cloister where Pedro Claver lived and died has become a special place of silence, and reflection-a shrine to the life's work of this extraordinary man. Here, visitors will find examples of Pre Colombian ceramics, and an extensive museum rich with objects of religious art. You also have nice place to eat and drink at the square.

Historical museum just across the street built in 1610, was the seat of the religious justice having power over all the Kingdom of New Granada during the colonial period. The palace is a wonderful example of XVIII century architecture; where is a museum these days there used to be a prison were infidels were tortured.

It is located on the island of Tierra bomba at one end of Canal de Bocachica. The passage through the canal was restricted by combining forces with the Battery of San José. Its construction began in 1753. In a bizarre, it is one of the most striking among the strengths of Cartagena de Indias. It was also a prison for its safe location and isolation from the mainland. It is located to short walk from the beaches of Bocachica. You also can go to Bateria del Angel San Rafael

Arts & Culture

This is a small but interesting modern art museum including some of the work - both paintings and sculpture - of one of Cartagena's most famous 20th century artists Enrique Grau. it's worth visiting just for his work alone, particularly his work called "Panoramica de Cartagena"

This is a small museum but full of history. The texts or descriptions are in Spanish and English so if one does not have a guide one can still see and understand the history. The museum preserves what is left of native culture not taken by the Spanish. Picture taking was allowed. The museum is mostly for the Zenu tribal collection. Not as large as the main museum in Bogota, but just as impressive and educational. Worth a visit during the peak heat of the day. I highly recommend it for content and layout.

Everything Else

Like the name says it, this is the place where the ships that were coming to Cartagena were going through the customs. Pretty plaza with some nice architecture (mayor of the city sits on this plaza) and Christopher Columbus monument. Also, you will find a tourist information office here. They were very helpful and recommended a free tour of Cartagena.
