A ton to do in this state park that is just outside Memphis city limits but feels like you are worlds away. Hiking trails, paved bike trail, playground and picnic areas, disc golf course, live nature programs, kayak/canoe rentals, and pontoon and canoe tours. Family recommendation...make a reservation for the Deep Swamp Canoe Tour (only $5 per seat or $10 per canoe) that tours one of the last standing cypress monocultures of the Mississippi. Don't forget to stop by the Shelby Forest General Store for one of their world-famous burgers and listen to live bluegrass music ever Friday night!

The Memphis Rock ‘n’ Soul Museum’s exhibition about the birth of rock and soul music, created by the Smithsonian Institution, tells the story of musical pioneers who, for the love of music, overcame racial and socio-economic barriers to create the music that shook the entire world. The museum offers a comprehensive Memphis music experience from the rural field hollers and sharecroppers of the 1930s, through the explosion of Sun, Stax and Hi Records and Memphis’ musical heyday in the 70s, to its global musical influence. Our favorite feature is the museum’s digital audio tour that allows visitors to select songs from period jukeboxes at the end of each gallery.

The Metal Museum is the only institution in the United States devoted exclusively to the advancement of the art and craft of fine metalwork. Located on the site of a former U.S. Marine Hospital, the grounds are absolutely gorgeous with a breath-taking views of the Mississippi River. Across the street from the Museum is Chickasaw Heritage Park. Once the fortress of Chickasaw chief Chisca, it features two ceremonial mounds built by Paleo-Indians in the 1500s. During the Civil War, the mounds were hollowed out and used for gun emplacements and munitions storage. This site, previously known as DeSoto Park, is believed to be where Spanish explorer Hernando DeSoto first viewed the Mississippi River in 1541.

Awesome little shop for homemade Mexican ice cream and popsicles. The variety of popsicles is amazing and the unique flavors make it hard to choose just one. One of the lovely girls behind the counter will be more than happy to tell you all about them or suggest a flavor based on your mood (ie. fruity, creamy, spicy).
