If you’re into this type of thing, get there early and do the tour. There’s no shade, so be prepared. Otherwise, you can get a nice view from the beach and save the crowds and entry fee. Another option is to book a snorkeling trip and do a drive by.

Food scene - street food

Whether you’re nursing a hangover or want some fuel for your day, this place is a must. Tacos are breakfast in Tulum, so plan to get here early. They close whenever they sell out, which is usually by 1PM. What to order? Anything. But especially the tacos de conchinita or lechón. You also can’t go wrong with quesadillas de conchinita.

Formerly Pablo Escobar’s private mansion, this hotel is now owned by an arts dealer. It’s beautifully designed. The restaurant is so-so, but the Instagram photos will be worth the visit.

Sparnaðarleiðir

Pesos

Although some places accept credit cards, most are cash only. The credit card machines are often down (due to weather or signal issues) and credit card theft isn’t uncommon. To avoid any headaches, be sure to use cash (pesos). You’ll get the best deals in taxis, stores, and when haggling. We recommend you get cash at an ATM on your way from the airport. It’s highly recommended that you only take out Pesos, not dollars, and only use ATM’s within banks. Don’t use the ones on the beach road. Reliable ATM’s are found at Bancomer, Scotiabank, HSBC, Banco Azteca, or Santander in town.

Tulum is perfect for families

As parents ourselves, we find Tulum to be very accepting and easy with kids. Ask us if you need any baby or kid gear. We’re happy to provide. Almost all restaurants are kid friendly, but stay away from Mi Amor, Azulik, or some of the higher end tourist spots. Be extra careful around pools and the beach, obviously. Check out the food truck park (Palma Central), complete with a playground and Posada Margherita on the beach. We’re happy to help you book a babysitter, kids music classes, or swim classes. There’s so much for kids to do!
