Sightseeing

The town and beach of Praia das Macas (Apple Beach) is a solid favorite with Portuguese families. The small town is centered around a short but wide beach that extends back to a salt water big swimming pool complex. The town itself is charming with well maintained traditional painted houses and a lively daily market. Praia das Macas popularity originated in part to the quaint tram that connects the resort town with the historic town of Sintra high up in the hills. The beach is excellent with golden sand and very clear sea water which whips up some decent surfing/ body-boarding waves

Sintra tram (Electrico de Sintra) connects Sintra with Praia das Maçãs. This tram uses classic 1930 Brill trams, which slowly trundle down from the hills of the Serra de Sintra to the pretty coastal town. The tram ride is quaint and enjoyable but the number of services is very limited and tend to be very busy in the summer

Arts & Culture

The Palacio da Pena is the most extravagant and colourful of the palaces and a work of pure Romanticism high up on a hill above Sintra. It’s a crazy mashup of styles: a mock medieval castle with islamic domes, Moorish geometric tiles, and Disney-esque pink towers
