Sightseeing

Mine Kill State Park overlooks the NY Power Authority's Blenheim-Gilboa Pumped Storage Power Project. Providing good fishing opportunities, the lower reservoir is stocked with trout and walleye, and has several other species, including bass and is ideal for motor boating, kayaking and water skiing. Mine Kill State Park has an Olympic size pool, wading pool and a diving pool available at no cost to anyone. Swim lessons are taught in the summer months--please contact the park office for details. Other warm weather activities include hiking and mountain biking on the parks 8 miles of trails. Cascading 80 feet through a narrow gorge is the picturesque Mine Kill Falls for which the park is named. A separate parking area, 1/4 miles south of the parks' main entrance, provides access to the overlook viewing platforms, as well as the Long Path hiking trail to the lower falls and beyond. In winter, visitors enjoy snowshoeing, cross-country skiing and snowmobiling.

This is a great place for families and pretty walking paths. There are nice picnic areas and it’s fairly close to the cabin. Here’s a Google Review: “You might think it strange to give a power station a 5-star destination rating, but you would be wrong. Situated on the former estate of the early American politician, John Lansing Jr, the NYPA, has beautifully restored the home and out buildings he built circa 1819, for his daughter and son-in-law. In addition to touring the home, the NYPA has created a museum and learning center with interactive displays inside the former barn. If for nothing else, you can stop and enjoy the beautiful view and have a picnic at the large covered pavilion and stroll along the walking trails.”

Howe Caverns is a cave in Howes Cave, Schoharie County, New York. Howe Caverns is a popular tourist attraction, providing cave-goers with a sense of caving or spelunking, without needing the advanced equipment and training usually associated with such adventures. We’ve been a few times. It’s really fun – especially on hot days!

I know there was work being done on this area, but hopefully you can find the covered bridge.

This is the place to go for provisions, sandwiches, newspaper, you name it! And it's VERY close to the cabin. Oh, and there's a liquor store attached with lovely local wines.

A family run farm with 200 acres of fresh vegetables, small fruits, and greenhouse plants. “At our on-farm market, The Carrot Barn, you will find all of our produce as well as local beef, pork, chicken, milk, and cheeses. We also have gifts and cards from local artisans. Hungry? We have a cafe and bakery where you can get fresh salads, soups, sandwiches, and baked goods all made fresh on our premises!” It’s a lovely place and I’ve never been disappointed.

OK, it’s really a favorite right along with Heather Ridge, but there SO MUCH MORE. From their FB Site: The Ultimate Country Store and Ultimate Cafe too! Winner of Best Restaurant in Schoharie County for 6 years in a row! Here’s just part of a YELP review: “It's hard to miss the Apple Barrel itself, but once inside, it's easy to get lost in the rooms and aisles with all that good good country store merch in your face: jewelry, candles, knicknacks, clothing, a million fragrances of Poo-Pourri, rustic country decor, and to-die-for smelling Magnolia brand lotions and soaps fill almost every nook and cranny, and I'm here for it…”

We really enjoy walking through this small town and visiting the shops. I recently had dinner at the pasta place and it was terrific.

Entertainment

This is just plain rural fun. When you go to the drive in, expect to see an old school film. You can order hot cookies, popcorn, and the typical movie staples. From their website: 'Cinema with a Twist' in the New York's scenic Northern Catskills Established in 1959 by Peter Carelas, the Greenville Drive-In has been a social fixture and destination in the Northern Catskills for over six decades. The drive-in was revived and re-imagined after a brief period of transition by Dwight Grimm and Leigh Van Swall in 2015. The couple upgraded the both the projection system & audio transmission to modern digital platforms. A licensed biergarten with performing stage was added to the side of the concession stand. Local beer, wine & speciality cocktails were added to a concession menu which now features many locally-made snacks and sodas. The movie programming shifted away from the dependance on mainstream first-run features to an eclectic line-up of retro, independent and filmmaker-direct offerings. Local musicians were brought in to perform on weekends ahead of the movies. A vintage Airstream RV has been brought in to provide a truly unique accommodation experience. The typical drive-in season begins with an Annual Season Opening Party in early May and runs until Columbus Day weekend. Screenings are Friday & Saturday throughout, with Thursdays and Sundays usually added in the height of summer.
