Other Beaches to visit

This beach is just a couple of miles away but away from the boardwalk strip. You actually have to drive through a neighborhood to get to it. There is a city parking lot and bath house at the beach. It is a nice change of pace from main beach and often less crowded. Surfing is permitted.

Located inside the Wyndham Hotel at 56th Street, this grille is a fantastic place to grab a bite and enjoy the beach. It is the only hotel located in the "North End" area of the beach. What makes this area especially nice is the lack of hotels and wide open beaches. There is free parking on site. If you want to get away from the hustle and bustle of the main beach and also have access to food, drink, and restrooms, head up to the Surf Club. They have a large outdoor dining patio right on the beach. Additionally, you can choose to visit the "North End" beaches without visiting the Grill. If you drive North towards the grill, once you get to around 40th Street, you will bet in a residential zone. On street parking in the neighborhoods is legal and free. The challenge can be to find a parking spot. So you can turn right onto any street between 40th and around 80th and grab a parking spot. The beaches are relaxing and never crowded. It takes a little extra effort but it is beautiful and relaxing. There are no restroom facilities up this far. If you have trouble parking by turning right, you can also check for parking on the opposite side of Atlantic Ave. Just be careful crossing!

**Great for families with small children that are learning to swim** This beach feels like a private little island paradise located on the calm waters of the bay. The ocean waves can be intimidating for small children, not so here! Parking can be tough to find as the neighborhood is a popular spot for locals. There are no city parking lots. All parking must be found on the street. You can choose to camp out near one of the restaurants located along the beach for access to food and drinks. There are several restaurants and a a very cool brewery located in what used to be a fire house. It is called Commonwealth Brewery.

Great for families with young children intimidated by waves** Although the fishing pier is no longer open, the beaches all along shore drive are fantastic, calm waters for families with small children. The water is shallow and there are many sandbars that are fun to swim out to. There is on street parking in the neighborhoods off of Shore Drive. When I go to the bay, I normally turn right after the McDonalds located on the corner of Shore Dr and W Great Neck Road and immediately start looking for a parking spot. There are several beach access walking paths nearby. One is at the corner of W Great Neck Rd and Ocean Shore Ave, and another one is located a little further down on Ocean Shore Ave. If you are patient and drive around a bit, you will find a spot. It's a short walk down the path to the bay and these waters are so much calmer for small children. There are no restrooms or restaurants so come prepared with a cooler! There is a McDonald's as I mentioned, as well as a 7-11. I used to live in this neighborhood when my children were small. One of their favorite activities used to be to go down to the beach after dark with a flash light and sand bucket There are lots of "moon crabs" scurrying around on the beach after dark. The kids had fun catching a few of the smaller ones. Of course they peacefully released the little guys after a bit. This beach is just gorgeous in the evening around sunset! You will see families set up to enjoy the beauty of watching the sun going down, many people crabbing, perhaps some kayakers and people on stand up paddle boards. It is very quiet and calm compared to the board walk area! I highly recommend a visit to this area of Virginia Beach. Especially for those with young children.
