Places Worth Exploring!!

Sightseeing - IN THE CITY

These are IN THE CITY places to explore when you're wanting a great place to go hangout or explore.
Manito is a great get-away-from-it-all place that is right in the city. From its stately old trees and formal Duncan Gardens, to the lovely Japanese Gardens, summer concerts at the Park Cafe, and acres of rolling parkland to explore... Manito is worth the trip.

A visit to the Museum of Arts & Culture (locally known as the MAC) gives some historic insight into the area through local art & artifacts, along with rotational displays of an impressive permanent collection. There have been some wonderful special exhibitions such as the impressionists, art of the indigenous cultures and displays of contemporary artists. The museum is connected with the Campbell House, one of Spokane's historic gems; a mansion designed by local architect, Kirtland Cuter back in the early days of the city. Its a fun day.

Gonzaga University has a robust collection including works by old masters (Dürer, Rembrandt, Goya, and Delacroix) as well as modern masters (Rodin, Picasso, Chihuly, and Warhol). Because of limited exhibition space, works from the collection are not always on display. One of the most amazing aspects to this museum is that you can make a special request for a private viewing of specific prints. I have helt a Rembrandt in my hands. Amazing!! Contact Karen Kaiser, Curator of Education, at (509) 313-6613.

Riverfront Park is at the heart of the city, downtown. The site of the 1974 World Expo, it houses the wonderful Natatorium Park Carousel, built in 1909; still holds the lacy US Pavillion (from Expo '74) under which sits a small amusement park. The Park follow along the beautiful Spokane River and include bridges over the Falls. There is a new ice and skating rink and a gondola ride down over the Falls (breathtaking when the water is high in Spring). Its a great place to wander, people watch, sometimes catch a concert, and meander into downtown for shopping and a finding that just right restaurant (from among the many). If you like seafood, Anthony's has a great view over the Falls.

Kendall yards is a relatively new addition to Spokane. It is one of the newest preplanned communities, with upscale condos and homes, a shopping area and some trendy restaurants. Don't miss the wonderful Wednesday evening Street Fair (with music) during the summer. If you shop the market look for The Scone Ranger. Their Orange Cranberry, Sweet Jalapeno, and Pumpkin Scones are AMAZING!! Kendall Yards is along the paved Centennial Trail and a great place to walk along the river. The Wandering Table is a fun experience. Try the Chef's Choice. :)
