Food scene

Here I have listed some of the places nearby that offer good quality food, some in Hexham and others a little further afield to enjoy when you are out and about. I have tried to include tea rooms as well as pubs and restaurants, so there should be something for everyone.

Excellent food, great ambience in a traditional old coaching inn. Spotlessly clean with inside and outside eating space. This place is near to Keilder and would be ideal to have a meal at the end of a day out in the national park or if you are visiting the observatory.

The town of Alnwick with its market place, castle and gardens is well worth a visit and would keep you occupied for a full day. It is easily accessed from the A1 and once there you are so close to the magnificent Northumbrian coastline it would be a shame to miss it. You can follow the brown sign showing coastal route which will take you through many of the pretty coastal villages with plenty of opportunities to stop off and explore the beaches and sand dunes.

Seahouses is a bustling seaside town with its harbour and some small amusement arcades and cafes. It is from here that you can take a trip out to the far east islands to see the marine wildlife. Bamburgh is just north of here with its iconic castle in the sand dunes and the Grace Darling museum. Stunning beaches abound all along this coastline and there is always the opportunity to get away from the crowds. Budle Bay is near here and is a great beach to paddle board from. A little further north, before you get to Berwick , is the causeway which takes you to Lindisfarne with its castle and priory. Just be sure to check the tide times before you cross.

Fabulous day out visiting the house, gardens and extensive grounds of Cragside house situated just outside Rothbury. This was the first house in Europe to have hydroelectricity. There is a good sized cafe here but if you prefer to get away from the crowds then pack a picnic and find yourself a little spot to eat on one of the many walks around the estate.

Easily accessed with its own free car park, this museum and Roman fort is well worth a visit. Once you have visited the fort there is a lovely walk along the river Tyne which takes you into Corbridge village. This charming village has o lovely selection of independent shops and plenty of pubs and cafes to take refreshment. Be aware that the car park at the fort closes at 5.00 and the gate is locked. There is pay and display parking in the village itself and a free car park over the bridge on the south side of the river which is open 24 hours.

Visit the historic medieval village of Blanchland. There is a car park in the centre of the village, a greatr starting point for any of the many circular walks in the area. The village has been used as the location for many of the Catherine Cookson dramas filmed in the area. It boasts a beautiful pub, The Lord Crewe Arms and excellent tea room, The Whyte Monk Tearooms.
