Sightseeing

A comfortable 1.5km walk when the tide is low (keep track of high tide) to one of the most beautiful places, with sea life filled rock pools for snorkeling, view points from the Lions Head and just enjoying the serenity and beauty of this spot. Along this beach walk you'll get so see some fascinating sea life and also some of the highest fossil dune is South Africa. If you have taken the turn-off at Sedgefield-links just to the west of Sedgefield and you are driving alongside Swartvlei (Sedgefield Lagoon), you are heading for Gericke's Point beach. Park in the designated area - there are toilets here - and head to the right along this beautiful stretch of beach, which at certain times of the year is strewn with shells. Essential items are your camera, a hat and water because you're going to spend some time here. Ascertain yourself of tide times. The best time to go is when the tide starts going out. The rock pools give you a glimpse of fascinating creatures like sea crabs, shells, anemone, colourful small fish and sea urchins which can only be seen at low tide. Another reason for going at low tide is that Gericke's Point becomes an Island at high tide. Don't get so engrossed with looking at the rock formations, fossilized sand dunes and sea birds that you forget to check on the rising tide, unless of course you really want to spend a very long time at the Point!  Sedgefield itself is bordered by a series of parallel fossil sand dunes which are the highest in South Africa. The start of this series is to the west of Sedgefield near Kaaimans River and these sand dunes extend all the way to the east of Sedgefield at Brenton on Sea. Beneath the sea the ridges extend south, forming a series of reefs renowned for their sea life. Over a period of time steep cliffs have formed and if examined closely you will notice distinct layers and patterns in the dunes which were formed by water, wind and sand erosion.  The ruins along the way are those of the old whaling station which luckily closed down some years ago. From the parking area one can also walk along the beach towards Sedgefield if you would like to spend more time here. Distance: About 3km to the point and back. Difficulty: Easy. Permits/Costs: None Directions: From the N2 take the Sedgefield links turn-off just outside Sedgefield en-route to Wilderness, follow this road to the parking area. (The turn-off from the N2 is right next to a small golf course) Coordinates: S34 01.597 E22 46.483 Other: There are toilets at the start. Take enough water for the walk otherwise a picnic & goggles & snorkels & rock shoes

Pack a picnic basket, bring the kids and spend a lovely day in the heart of nature. This is a real fairy tale hike, and if the little ones listen carefully they can hear a conversation between the elves and the fairies. The trail is 5km in length, initially follows the Duiwe River and is very easy going except for the optional climb to a viewpoint. The stream is crossed via a wooden bridge and stepping stones. Plants on the route include Wild Grape which have the most vivid colours in autumn and tender new shoots in spring. Other plants include Sagewood and Num-num. Do make time to stop and check out some of the very interesting names which have been attached to the trees. You may encounter Cape Robin on the trail. Listen for their endearing songs, especially in the late afternoon. Seeing a Knysna Lourie in flight is always special and Cape Batises are a common sight. If you move cautiously, they will allow you to come real close to them and watch their activity in the shrubs. The trail ends at the pool and waterfall where you must be aware of slippery rocks. Follow the path back the way you came. Distances:  5km there and back Difficulty:  Easy Route markers:  Blue square signs with white feet on. Permits & Cost:  Self issue permit. No costs. Contact numbers:  SAN Parks Wilderness - +27(0)44 877 1197 Directions:  Option 1: Take the turnoff opposite Kleinkranz and follow the road for 2.4km across the rail way. It starts out tar and becomes a dirt road. The start of the trail is at a bridge across a stream. There is parking on the right just before you get to the bridge. Option 2: Take the Hoekwil turnoff near the Caltex petrol station on the eastern side of Wilderness, follow this road for 4.3km to the start of the trail. The start of the trail is at a bridge across a stream. There is parking on the left just after you pass the start of the trail. Coordinates:  Start : S33 59.028 E22 39.068 Other: Remember your camera and binoculars.

This is definitely an outing to do whilst in the Garden Route consisting of a boat cruise across the Knysna Lagoon to the pristine Featherbed Bay on the Western Head, followed by a trailer ride up the hill and then a choice of either hiking approx 2km back to the venue or taking the trailer ride back for those not up to the hike. You can choose to enjoy a scrumptious lunch at Cruise Cafe or on selected weekend at the Featherbed itself. The most beautiful scenery and well worth the trip!
