Sightseeing

Seattle’s most iconic landmark, built for the 1962 world’s fair. Tips: • There’s often parking on 3rd Ave • King County residents get a discount on tickets, so if you know someone in Seattle see if they can show their ID at the ticket counter or buy the tickets on-line for you. • If Space Needle tickets are too expensive, grab a drink at the Starbucks on the 40th floor of the Columbia Tower to enjoy a view even higher up than the Space Needle.

Overlooking the Elliott Bay waterfront, Pike’s Place is one of the oldest continuously operated public markets in the US. Must sees include: • The first Starbucks store. (Tip: If you are here during the summer months be prepared to stand in a long line). • Market Theater Gum Wall. Leave your mark on Seattle by leaving some ABC gum of your own. • Pike Place Fish Market. If you stick around long enough (usually just a few minutes) you’ll witness the fish throwing that makes this place world famous. Did you know that the owner of this market recently bequeathed the business to his employees? The workers who have made this place famous with their hard work, customer service, and, of course, fish throwing, are now the proud owners.

Take a Ferry Ride

If your kids are anything like mine, they’ll love a ferry ride across the sound, even if it’s just riding across and then back again. I’d recommend going to Bainbridge Island from downtown Seattle, or, if you want to avoid downtown, drive or walk-on the Edmonds ferry to Kingston.

If you are headed to the Seattle Center from the Seattle downtown core without a car, the monorail takes you there conveniently, and riding it is one of the fun things to do in Seattle with kids who enjoy being in motion. One-way tickets cost $2.50/adult; $1.25/children 5-12

Take Public Transportation

Public transportation is geared toward thousands of commuters in the city, so wherever you need to go, there's a way to get there. Get the Trip Planner App to help plan your trip via bus or Link Rail. The Link Rail goes from the airport to UW (and will have a stop near us in a few years!).

Airport trips (from SeaTac)

•Plan to arrive 2 hours before your flight. •Renting a car at the airport is more expensive than other car rental agencies. •Best ways to get to/from SeaTac: 1. Uber/Lyft - If you have never used an Uber, use the promo code c28tgue to get your first ride free; Cost estimate: $40-$50; Time estimate: 40 min minimum depending on traffic 2. Link rail to/from the UW station then Uber/Lyft from there; Cost estimate: $25; Time estimate: 1 hour minimum depending on traffic (Note: Link Rail does not run before 5am)

Green Seattle

- Bring a reusable grocery bag when shopping. There are not plastic bags in stores within Seattle city limits, and most places will charge a 5-10 cent bag fee to use a paper bag - Straws and coffee sleeves aren't always provided, but usually provided upon request - Tossing something into the garbage isn't so simple in Seattle, but generally they are color coded to help you out. Black=garbage; blue=recycle; green=compost.

Preparing for the weather

Summer travel: Summers in Seattle are paradise, but even on hot days the temp drops at night. Dress in layers so you can take off/add on layers as the weather warms/cools throughout the day Winter travel: Contrary to popular belief, winter temperatures are mild. Rather, NW winters are marked by darkness and rain. Bring gear to protect against rain rather cold. Good rain jackets and shoes are a must, and if darkness affects you stock up on your Vitamin D. Tip: If you don't want to stand out as a tourist, don't carry an umbrella.
