Great food with views of the lake. The Sunday Happy Hour is an especially good deal as they offer their extensive wine collection for half price on Sundays. Happy Hour menu is excellent with generous portions and begins at 3:30 pm

Manzana is a busy and good local grill with a separate bar and outdoor seating when it’s warm enough. It is located in the heart of the busiest business district in Lake O— Millenial Park Plaza on Ave and 1st Street. There is plenty of underground parking very nearby but the walk from my house is about 5 minutes and easy to do.

This is such a pretty place to go and hang out by the river. You can watch the sun rise if you are so inclined or take a picnic lunch here and find a bench or throw a blanket on the grass and enjoy the river lazily floating by. This is two blocks over and across the street, then you can walk or drive down to the river and park in one of the parking lots.

The food at Oswego Grill is outstanding as is the service and ambiance. This is one of my favorite restaurants in Portland (which is saying a lot because we are a food lovers town! The menu is large and caters to all sorts of special needs (Gluten free, vegan, Keto, etc) . Check out the seasonal menu offered. We love the roast turkey dinner offered on the winter menu. Great wine selection as well as some interesting cocktails. Don’t miss one of their heavenly desserts. They offer a.Complimentary HUGE banana split sundae if you tell them you are celebrstingva birthday when you call for your reservation (recommended)

Really excellent Thai food is available in this family owned and operated restaurant. Beautifully presented. Sometimes the service is not so great, other times it’s good. The ambiance is nice but not fancy. The portions are gigantic and we usually order one dish each and share, family style like one does in Chinese restaurants. The flavors offered here are rich and authentic. Excellent curries, pad Thai, battered chicken dishes and lots of dishes using our excellent native fish and freshly grown herbs and spices and other bounty from the Pacific Northwest. They offer many vegetarian, vegan , gluten- free dishes.

We love this place for good old Mexican food that is cheesy, rich in flavors, and offers lots of variety in its dishes. Besides the usual beef, chicken and pork, there are many standard favorites offered using fish or shrimp, even lobster. The chili relleno is excellent and personally I could live on their cheese enchiladas. The make excellent guacamole and offer a couple of salsas with chips as starters. And of course, the Margaritas are your friend! This cute hand painted ( inside) upscale “hole in the wall” little cafe is a local treasure located in a small strip shopping area. Prices are reasonable

This is a chain but a good one for a hearty breakfast or lunch. Mostly we go here for breakfast. I don’t think I’ve ever had a bad meal at Biscuits. They have Eggs Benedict ( in several iterations) that are always good and I love the scrambled breakfast skillets too. Of course the biscuits and gravy are terrific. I like the fried has browns but always ask for them to be fried dark and crisp— just my preference. There is something for everyone at BIscuits! Nice big cups of coffee too!

If you need a great mall, here’s your place. It has all the big anchor stores; Nordstrom, Macy’s, etc plus the usual Apple Store, Gaps, H&M, Pottery Barn, Sephora, Williams-Sonoma and many, many other unique as well as our beloved American Chain stores. There are some nice restaurants in the mall including A Cheesecake Factory and a Chinese restaurant that I have heard wonderful reviews on but I don’t know the name or exact location. Washington Square mall is a very nice and very large mall and is only about 10-15 minutes by car from my house. On the streets around the mall in its general vicinity are lots of other interesting and fun stores worth taking a look at too.

One of my favorite stores ever and a must see for cooks and kitchen gadget junkies. This is a really beautiful boutique cooks supply. Store with everything from table linens, to cookware and small appliances, to everything needed for baking the perfect cookie and the prettiest cake. Stemware and dishes are sold along with top of the line extracts and oils and everything else the chef in your home might need or think they need to make that perfect Yorkshire Pudding or lemon soufflé. Even if you don’t care about cooking this is a really fun store to visit. Don’t miss it on your walk into town. It’s on the corner of A ave and State st, two blocks or so from my house. Easy walk

There is something for everyone here at Bridgeport village
Bridgeport Village is my favorite place to shop here in the SW Portland area. This is a charming village with a parking structure situated along the back of it to accommodate lots of cars so one does not have to scramble and fight to find one of too few spaces. There are some great stores in Bridgeport such as Crate and Barrel- a personal favorite— and a nice Barnes and Noble Bookstore. I love yo hang out for hours in a bookstore on a weekend and although they aren’t what they used to be, it’s still a bookstore where a bibliophile will feel at home. For the real deal see Powell’s Books, a Portland source of pride. In Bridgeport I enjoy stores like Orvis (a nice large Orvis too!), Sundance, J.Jill women’s clothing, Urban Outfitters, Anthropology, Eileen Fisher, a brand new Sephora, a multiplex movie theater and many, many other stores you may like. There are also some great places to eat there including McCormick and Schmicks, and an Itslian place and what looks like a fun Martini Bar — I’m past the age where this kind of place would hold much appeal for me but 20 or so years ago, I would have been able to give you a detailed review on it. Things change 😁

This is a regional version of Whole Foods with their own twist. Definitely worth a visit if you are into natural and organic foods and produce, a great wine selection, a really good hot or cold deli and prepared foods section as well as a large section of gluten- free items, as well as vegan, vegetarian and Keto- friendly foods. These are charming stores, predictably a bit expensive but with excellent customer service and excellent products— from their certified organic carrots and onions to their gorgeous cakes with buttercream icing and luscious fruit pies and divine breads. It’s worth a look

There is always something interesting being shown at this charming and funky theater cafe. They get the big name movies here and usually will also have some obscure documentary as well. There is one theater with traditional stadium- style seating with little trays that fold up over the lap to place your food and wine while enjoying the movie.? The other theater has tables and chairs that are strategically placed and sitting on graduated raised floors from the front to the back to help the visibility for everyone.? It works quite well. It’s nice to have a place to put your food and a drink as well. I always order the Margherita pizza and a nice glass of Sauv blanc and the pizza is one of the best in town. Their food at the cafe in the rear of the theater is very good and they grow many of their own herbs and a small amount of produce right there at the edge of the lake. The outdoor seating when weather permits is very pretty right there at the waters edge. This is located right around the corner from us less that a 3 minute walk from my house.

For a drug store, this place is spectacular. It’s new- ish, clean as a whistle, well organized and has both a cosmetic and wine departments that will knock your socks off. The cosmetic section rivals a department store in the lighting and layout of the many interesting and varied priced lines. Most have testers available— unusual for drug store cosmetics which is frustrating. This store also has s nice sized section of supplements and other vitamin and minerals as well as a robust offering of personal protection wear for both men and women. The Rx department has become notably more efficient in the past year and I highly recommend them now.

This isn’t your typical While Foods Store so if you are expecting to go into the deli and buy some good hot ready made food like all WF markets have, think again. This 365 store was one of about 6 or something like that. They were built as a trial to see if people wanted something like a Whole Foods Lite kind of thing with lower prices and WAY fewer items on offer than a traditional WF. Turns out most people do not want this. The store is sparsely supplied and mostly consists of the WF brand of 365 organic canned and boxed goods. It’s really too bad they decided to put an experimental store like that here in Lake O where there is so clearly a market for an especially large and nice version of the regular WF. Apparently the plan is for this store to gradually transition to a regular WF but doing it slowly doesn’t appear to working. They would be wise to shut it down, make the transition and reopen it and see if they can get rid of the bad reputation of this store. If you are interested, take a look. You may be able to find a bottle of wine but don’t expect to see the usual selection of interesting wines on offer at your neighborhood Whole Foods.

The best ice cream ever! And many very unusual flavors. Honey Lavender is a favorite of mine. A friend loves the champagne flavored ice cream. They have been making a lot of beer flavored ice cream lately too. Give me the caramel praline any day!
