Vibrant town set on the rocky caldera. At the very bottom of the caldera there is the famous port of Fira where most of the cruise and water ferries arrive. Comfortable shoes are a must if you plan on walking up the famous stairway leading up to the village otherwise cable cars are also available. The town preserves an old fashion feeling allowing only foot traffic to cross through its narrow street ways, filled with galleries, unique glass art pieces, museums, and the famous cathedral area.

Welcome to the volcanic beach of Kamari! Black sand from end to end street vendors restaurants bars and swimming underneath the ruins of ancient Thera. If you are planning a trip to the black sand beach maybe squeeze in a stop at a local winery on your way there ! Notice the grapevines twisted in braided wreaths along the road! Kamari is on the opposite side of of the caldera so the sunset will not be visible from Kamari, but no need to rush it’s beautiful everywhere on the island! You can see the island of Anafi from that beach.

Sightseeing

Unbelievable! You can access the red beach if you continue to follow the road south of the archaeological town of akrotiri. However be cautious i recommend photographs are taken without entering the beach on foot as there are sudden landslides. You can access by boat simply purchase tickets by a local ticket booth at fira or the port. After passing the church you can walk far enough to take photographs without crossing into it.

It is an opportunity to witness firsthand the progress of civilization from antiquity until today. The town is pretty much intact as it was thousands of years ago enclosed by a protective structure. Visitors can enter and view the town as archaeologists continue to dig the volcanic ash and reveal more secrets of the past hidden right beneath your feet as you walk the exhibit!

Oia is on the northwest end of the island and becomes very crowded as time approaches to view the sunset. I would recommend gym shoes if you’re planning on a lot of walking around town. If you are driving to Oia keep in mind there are no gas stations make sure you fill up before the trip. The nearest gas station is imerovigli about an 8 km/4mile ride. Also keep in mind the island becomes a one way from Oia once you enter the square of the town. If you are heading for the sunset I recommend you take the caldera road on the west end of the island towards Oia. Simply head north from Maria paradeiso on the roadway following signs towards Oia. take a look at the different colors in the mountain side. Not only will you pass through the most narrow part of the island ( geology narrows the island) but you’ll get a chance to view the colorful result of the lava flow cooling at different temperatures and resulting in a tricolor mountain panoramic views. There is also public transportation and transfer tours that can accommodate you visit to Oia.

Located above Maria paradeiso, offering great views into the caldera. Little bit above the average price range but the service is incredible and the food is delicious Mrs. Fotini is an incredible hostess and chef!

In the heart of Mesaria I would recommend this as one of the best places in the town square for any type of meal, their prices are sensible the food is great and the staff is always willing to be accommodating. The great thing is they deliver right into the caldera!
