2300 Arboretum Drive E. - Azalea Way is the most iconic feature of the Washington Park Arboretum. Azalea Way was developed beginning in the late 1930s and is a key feature of the original Olmsted Brothers design. It is a 3/4 mile long level walk through the heart of the Arboretum, featuring azaleas, flowering cherries, dogwoods, magnolias and companion plants, set against a backdrop of evergreen trees and second growth conifers. The Seattle Garden Club sponsored the design and the initial plantings of thousands of azaleas in 1939.

On the dry side of the Cascade Range, the entire town center is modeled on a Bavarian village as part of a civic initiative that began in the 1960s. The area is a major, four-season tourist destination with festivals nearly every month and a multitude of events year round. Many shops and dining options in a very beautiful setting! A 3 hour drive via US-2 and Stevens Pass. Travel further east on US-2 towards Wenatchee and visit fruit stands (in season) and wine tasting stops.

Looking for a day trip? We recommend Whidbey Island, known mostly for its small-scale agriculture, and the arts. While the town of Oak Harbor at the north end of the island supports the Whidbey Island Naval Air Station, the rest of this rather long island in the middle of Puget Sound is quite rural with quaint towns and many beach access points. One will find a wide range of art shops and small restaurants in the towns of Coupeville, Freeland and Langley. Coupeville's Penn Cove Mussel Farm exports large quantities of its highly renowned Penn Cove Mussels. This aquaculture facility, along with a number of small farms, reflects the rural agricultural nature of most of central Whidbey Island. Many of these small farms host farm stands onsite, where customers may buy produce, flowers, meat, eggs and other locally raised products directly from the farmers. Whidbey is home to numerous working artists, writers, and performers. These include many well-known painters, sculptors, glass artists, wood workers, metal workers, mixed media artists, photographers, authors, poets, actors, and musicians. In addition to being a haven for artists, the southern end of Whidbey Island also serves as a minor bedroom community for the nearby cities of Everett, where the Boeing Everett Factory is located, and Seattle. Commuters to and from those areas use the Washington State Ferries system's run between Clinton and Mukilteo. Whidbey Island contains Ebey's Landing National Historical Reserve, the first national historic reserve in the US created by the National Park Service to preserve the rural history and culture of the island and to protect the area's rare and sensitive plants. Washington State Parks located on the island include Deception Pass State Park (the most visited state park in Washington), Joseph Whidbey State Park, Fort Ebey State Park, Fort Casey State Park, Possession Point State Park, and South Whidbey Island State Park. There is also a county operated park we recommend; Double Bluff County Park, a 3/4 acre park with beach access, picnic area and off leash dog park. To get there, go to I-5 north to SR-526 (Mukilteo Ferry) to the ferry landing. It's just a 15 minute ride to Whidbey Island. We recommend visiting Deception Pass State Park before driving off the island to the north across the Deception Pass Bridges and following the highway back to I-5 at the town of Mount Vernon. Ask us for more information, if needed.

An 'Icon on the Horizon' within a few hours drive from Seattle. Ascending to 14,410 feet above sea level, Mount Rainier stands as an icon in the Washington landscape. An active volcano, Mount Rainier is the most glaciated peak in the contiguous U.S.A., spawning five major rivers. Subalpine wildflower meadows ring the icy volcano while ancient forest cloaks Mount Rainier’s lower slopes. Wildlife abounds in the park’s ecosystems. A lifetime of discovery awaits. There’s a reason why La Conner is so often voted the most perfect Washington state weekend getaway destination and land on top of the romantic getaways Washington State lists–not only is it beautiful, but the community is full of genuinely warm and friendly folks. Also, there are many shops and restaurants with water views. About 1-1/2 hour drive north of Seattle. Added attraction in April are the nearby tulip fields of the Skagit Valley Tulip Festival. https://lovelaconner.com/

In addition to the lineup of year-round organic house beers, their brewers share a passion for crafting unique seasonal offerings, producing as many as 50 different recipes throughout the year. Most of these also use 100% certified organic raw materials.

14330 Lake City Way NE 206.363.1167 https://www.heavensentfriedchicken.com/ After moving with the U.S. Coast Guard to Seattle 40 years ago, Ezell Stephens dreamed of opening his own fried chicken restaurant in the city. Realizing he would need to add clerical expertise to the cooking skills he had learned at a Marshall, Texas, fried chicken restaurant, he set about doing so in several ways, sometimes at the same time. He learned management skills through working for Kentucky Fried Chicken, studied how to run a business at Seattle Community College, and mastered courses in commercial baking. All that time he was making payments on a building he had bought in downtown Seattle opposite Garfield High School that would be his first restaurant. But, although he now believed he had the skills, he had to wait another two years for a $120,000 loan from the Small Business Administration before realizing his dream. The preparation had taken 11 years.
