This used to be one of the oldest pubs in Modena, and upon retirement of its former owner, it has been taken over by Valerio, a university mate of mine. Now it is a hip cocktail bar in a popular street in the very city centre, 2 minutes from home: Via Carteria, the 'artists' street, with cool little independent artisan shops.

Taste good beers and enjoy good rock music in this hip vintage place run by Simone, a neighbour of mine (and of you as well, during your stay!). The pub is a couple of minutes walking from home, in via Carteria, called the 'artist street' because of its creative and independent shops and workshops.

Food farms & tours

This place is special because of its location, in the attic of the old town hall. It is very small, compared to other more 'commercial' acetaia's where traditional balsamic vinegar is produced and sold. It organizes guided tasting tours in English as well, entrance costs a couple of euros.

Sightseeing

In a historical modenese courtyard there is an ancient holm oak tree who peacefully and generously offers her energy and company to those who are open to it.

This is the place to go to for booking guided tours, cultural and sightseeing experiences. Next to the main square (Piazza Grande, where Duomo is, our romanic cathedral), a couple of minutes walking from home.

Traditional restaurants

An apartment on the first floor of a building in the very city centre, which was turned into one of the best traditional restaurants (trattoria) where to taste real modenese gastronomy. Crowded and loud, which is part of the whole experience :) Make sure to reserve beforehand to be sure to get a table. you won't be disappointed! This is a 'must be'.

20 minutes from Modena by car, this place is quite renowned in Modena for its meat and traditional dishes. A friend of mine is chef there, and she told me that Massimo Bottura himself is a friend of the restaurant's owner, so every now and then he goes there to eat himself. Classic / traditional styling of the interior and high food quality, a bit pricey.

I love this place because of its location, in one of the nicest terraces in the old town, next to a relaxed Irish pub, and because of its good traditional food with gluten free options as well.

Zelmira is literally around the corner, in what I think is the cutest and cosiest little square in Modena. One of the oldest restaurants in Modena, it offers good traditional dishes.

This bakery is the 'urban' version of a bakery that started in the mountains (Rocca Malatina, 1 hr drive from Modena, in a beautiful regional park). The food they prepare is very special, made with old cereals, processed with care and knowledge, and with all time it requires. Ideal for breakfast, brunch or aperitivo.

Hiking

One hour drive from Modena, in the Apennines of Reggio Emilia, you will reach this ancient mountain that Dante Alighieri was already mentioning in his Divina Commedia. Comparable to Mount Uluru in Australia, it is a magic place worth visiting if you love being in nature. The hike to reach the top is relatively easy and short.
