Connemara day trip

Some of my favourite parts of Connemara.
Connemara National Park has 2,000 hectares of mountains, bogs, heaths, grasslands and forests. There is a great selection of walks with amazing views.

Kean's is the perfect traditional Irish pub to warm up after a hike. I'd recommend their 'toasted special' sandwich washed down by a pint of Guinness (if you aren't driving) or a perfectly brewed cup of coffee.

One of the most beautiful beaches in Ireland. It backs onto Gurteen bay which rivals its beauty. It is as good for a walk on a cold winters day as it is for a swim and picnic on a hot summers day.

This is a very interesting historic mine and family farm visit. We first went there about fifteen years ago when it first opened. It has been developed and improved constantly since them.

Beautiful beach and walk. Watch out that the incoming tide doesn't trap you on the island for 12 hours. They have a horseracing meeting on the beach in early August. The racecourse is constructed as the tide falls and everything is removed before the tide comes back in. Google "Omey Island Races" for details of the next one.

Maumean is a walk to a mass rock dating back to penal law times when Catholics has to worship in secret. It is a mountain pass in Connemara that links the Maum and Inagh Valleys through the Maumturk mountains. Allow a few hours and maybe even say a short prayer at the top.

Leenaun (Leenane) is the village at the end of the Killary Fjord. Boat trip information is available on www.killaryfjord.com. There are scenic drives west along the fjord towards Glassillaun Bay Beach, east towards Keane's Bar and Cong and north towards Ashley Falls and Westport. Ashley Falls are only a few minutes north by car.
