The road to Hana is a beautiful day trip. I think the key is leaving early in the morning, around 8 am, so you are a little ahead of the crowds. It's super fun! Be sure to stop along the way to walk to see the waterfalls.

Sunrise at Haleakala is fantastic! Check the weather forecast for a clear morning. Even though you need to leave very very early, it is totally worth doing. It is very cold up there, so wear your mainland clothes. The first time I went, my friend who lives on Maui said to wear all the clothes I had. I thought I knew better and we froze! It's also fun to do the bike ride down and there are several different companies that offer those. I'm not much of a bike rider, but it was downhill all the way (except for one section that was slightly uphill). We stopped for breakfast on the way down, it was such a fun day.

There is a well stocked Safeway a few blocks from the condo at the Cannery Mall. It's less crowded in the early mornings (7-9 am).

Everything Else
I think sitting on the lanai (balcony) in our unit is the best place on the island. The view can't be beat. Its so peaceful to sit and listen to the waves. At night, there are stars as far as the eye can see. During the day you can see whales (when they are in town) turtles and fish.
