Food Scene

(Daytime only.) Great location and great, home made food. Based on a working farm. Ideal for a break on the Bewerley Industrial Heritage Trail. Or at any other time, too!

Nice location and good food (particularly game and fish). It's a pub, so obviously it's also a good place to get a drink.

Great old pub, lit by gaslight. The cruck barn was built using traditional techniques and is the first one built in Nidderdale for 400 years. Decent food, good selection of beer.

Nice and local (Pateley Bridge). Good for a reasonably priced Italian meal. It's also a wine bar. It can be very busy, so you may need to book.

Parks & Nature

Fantastic rock formations, created by water, glaciation and wind erosion of the millstone grit. Great for kids and adults alike. Views across Nidderdale. You can walk there from our door - though it's about 12 miles round trip.

Lovely, varied walk. Not too long (4.5 miles), not too challenging. Best of the local reservoir walks.

There's a great circular walk via Burnsall and Skyreholme, taking in a scramble up Troller's Gill (a steep, dried up river bed). I always start from the footpath on New Road down to Hartlington, which gives fabulous views towards Grassington.

A nice, gentle (though often muddy), scenic walk that can be followed up with tea at The Old School Tea Room, in Hebden - order afternoon tea the previous day for a special treat. Start at Hebden and follow the river to Linton Falls. Head up to Grassington (quaint place to spend some time), follow Main Street up to Low Lane on right. Almost immediately, turn left onto High Lane. Follow High Lane back to Hebden. The falls are fun, and the Grassington -> Hebden stretch is very scenic.

If you're into horticulture, this place is the place for you. If you're not, it's still impressive, and there's a Betty's Tea Room for refreshments.

Parcevall Hall Gardens are a renowned historic plantsman's garden at the heart of Wharfedale in the Yorkshire Dales National Park. Located at the head of a small valley, the gardens are a hidden treasure and well worth seeking out. Comprising 24 acres of formal and woodland gardens they rise up the hillside for 200 feet giving wonderful views in every direction. The gardens are at the bottom end of Troller's Gill, and you'll pass them if you do the Troller's Gill walk.

You can book various outdoor activities here: canyoning, abseiling, caving, canoeing and more. Or you can just visit the cafe and glass floored events room, and wander round the gorge and caves.

Sightseeing

It was autumn when I first went to Fountains. Everything was shrouded in mist, with hundreds of jackdaws cawing as they gliding in and out of the tops of the trees and ruins. Very evocative. Don't be put off by the idea of a lot of old ruins, it really is impressive. And there are also the extensive water gardens, wooded walks round the periphery, follies, a deer park and, of course, a couple of cafes. Fountains Abbey and Studley Royal Water Garden is a World Heritage Site.

Stimulate your senses and explore your wilder self at Yorkshire's biggest and highest public art work. Created by the artist Andrew Sabin, The Coldstones Cut is Yorkshire's latest visitor attraction. A massive construction which visitors can freely walk through and explore, the sculpture overlooks the huge working Coldstones Quarry and offers spectacular views over the scenery of Nidderdale in the Yorkshire Dales.

Harrogate's about 30 mins drive away. You can indulge yourself at the Turkish baths and then treat yourself to afternoon tea at the original Betty's Cafe Tea Room. Also good for shopping and restaurants.
