Tivatska Solila - is the place where in the Middle Ages salt was collected, which was worth more than gold. The salt was formed from the evaporation of sea water and settled in special earthen ramparts. According to historical sources in 1425, all Solila was divided into 109 plots. Today it is a bird sanctury. This place was chosen by migratory birds, of the 111 species of birds that can be seen here, only 4 species live in Tivatska Solila constantly. Data on types of local residents are not static, and change every year. The most valuable items of Salila are a crane, sea hawk, snipe, greater flamingo and the Javanese Cormorant. Stunning place to walk with binoculars!

We love this place, there are Austrian-Hungarian ruins going back some 100 and more years, where Austrian soldiers kept their horses, huge water containers were built to capture water. A bakery which used to bake some 20000 loaves a day, there are remnants of a Theatre; beautiful walks; endless trees; wild flowers; herb plants; and fortresses one can climb up to - with care. It is about 1000m high, snow comes from November- December from 850m upwards. A beautiful place in the summer to escape the heat.

Arts & Culture

The former Royal Capital of Montenegro. The city has kept the architectural style developed in the second half of the 19th century. Former Embassies, the Royal Palace and other formal buildings co-exist happily with normal houses, shops, restaurants &c. National Museum of Montenegro is worth visiting on a rainy day.

Built on an artificial island opposite Perast, this is a 'must-see' place for visitors. The small chapel is dedicated to Our Lady and contains many donations from seafarers for safe journeys. In summer, the island is constantly full of visitors so that it is difficult to appreciate the essential holiness of the place. The wooded island next to it is a (private) Benedictine monastery where monks come from other parts of Europe for a holiday.

Sightseeing

The major tourist attraction in Risan, so a 'must-see'. Discovered in the 1930s during excavations for a new building, the mozaics form the floor decoration of a Roman villa dating from the 2nd century A.D. They were neglected and left exposed to the elements until the mid 2000s, when a protective roof was built over them, financed by USAID. The municipality has now recognised their economic value, so tourist buses arrive daily, mainly from the cruise ships visiting Kotor. For our guests, it's best to visit the mozaics on your way to or from the shops on foot, either before about 09:30 / 10:00 when the buses start arriving, or later after about 16:00.

The traditional buildings of the town have been well restored - many bought by film-stars and other millionaires. Take a pleasant stroll along the waterfront, and enjoy a coffee/ drink/ meal at one of the restaurants with a view across the Bay and the water lapping against the seawall.

Everything Else

Kotor Old Town is the 'must-see' place in the area, giving the Bay of Kotor its name. Climb the old town walls to the Church halfway up, or the fortress at the top; visit the 1200-year-old Cathedral; shop for souvenirs, clothes or antiques; eat or drink; plus a serious discotheque for those who want nightlife. Kotor has it all.
