Fabulous and quaint, this cafe is a rustic bubble in the heart of Devonport village. Friendly staff, great coffee. Great place to grab a bite just before a movie at The Vic movie theatre next door.

You will not find a better cafe in the whole of Auckland. This is a secret spot for locals... It is known for its desserts, which are out of this world delicious. Make sure to visit the garden area outside round the back, which has a play area for kids. Beautiful and original decorations inside, amazing atmosphere. Fantastic coffee and good lunch/ brunch options.

Drinks & Nightlife

This is the Takapuna branch of the famous Manukau Rd. Sake Bar Nippon. Authentic, fresh and *delicious* Japanese food. Authentic decor inside and staff costumes. Good for a night out for two, sushi train for kids, or a group karaoke - you'll need to book. Closed on Monday nights. My favourite is the sashimi boat or okonomiaki. If you have movie tickets for next door, tell them at the beginning of your meal for fast service.

Parks & Nature

Ditch the crowds and come sunbathe in this little spot of sunshine. This is a quiet local beach where you can see Rangitoto Island easily and clearly. There aren't usually many people here so good spot for peace & quiet. The water tends to be calmer this side of the peninsula, so great spot for kids.

Climb this magnificent 3,000 year old volcano. Watch the sunset from the top and walk through lava caves. To get there, catch the ferry from Devonport or downtown Auckland, or... Kayak from St. Heliers with a guide. Takes about 45 minutes to climb to the top, fully accessible with trails and steps where needed. Look back from the summit onto Auckland city and take in the breathtaking view!

Sightseeing

You can drive, hike or run up to Mt. Victoria summit, and be rewarded with a 360 view of Auckland. Stunning view of Auckland city from one side, and on the other side you will see wide open ocean vistas of Rangitoto Island and the entire Hauraki Gulf. If driving up to the summit, enter from Kerr St. On the summit, you can also visit the old tunnels and cannon build as the defence line during WWII. Free entry.

This spot is known mostly to locals. It is a set of underground tunnels and cannons built during WWII as a defence line. Makes for a very interesting visit and includes a short walk through the bush to get into the tunnels. Free entry, fully accessible and sign posted.

Essentials

Nice little supermarket, open in convenient hours. It is a small Countdown supermarket though so doesn't have the full range of products as other Countdowns. But has all the basics plus most of the common extras, good meat section and home essentials.

Located right opposite our house, and open early morning till late evening. Super handy for milk, bread and other home essentials or last minute items. Slightly more expensive than a supermarket, but on the other hand it's very convenient!

The Takapuna Sunday markets are well known throughout Auckland, but especially the peninsula - every Sunday 6am-12pm. You can find anything here from fresh produce, street food, clothing, arts & crafts and genuine antiques and other knick knacks. Cash only, and be prepared to bargain if that's your thing - otherwise items are marked for price as well :)
