3-course Dessert Menu? YES PLEASE! This intimate little joint is the BEST place to grab dessert, even if you have to wait in line. I prefer sitting at the bar. The cheesecake is to die for!

My regular spot for espresso and lattes. The owner, Jamie, and his wife have run the spot for years and have a very devoted clientele of locals. They bake all their own pastries. I get the frittata every morning for breakfast, and often go back in the afternoon for their sandwich, both of which change daily. CASH ONLY.

In 2010 this was rated the #26 Best Restaurant in the World. I've never been disappointed. And, the best part, is the food is extremely interesting. Definitely worth a try. Probably worth the wait.

This place is incredible for pizza by the slice, at 4 am, when you've had a little to drink. The artichoke slice is the best, followed closely by the Sicilian.

Excellent Vietnamese food. Expect to wait for a table, and the service is sub-par by NYC standards, but if Vietnamese is what you're craving this is your best bet.

Great Mexican food (and margaritas) served in a lively atmosphere. I highly recommend going on a nice day because they open up all the glass walls and the entire restaurant feels like you're eating outside. In nice weather I definitely recommend reservations.

Perhaps my favorite pasta restaurant in the East Village. It's part of the Andrew Carmellini restaurant group.

My favorite Thai place in NYC. It's a no-frills hole in the wall (most of their business is delivery—the delivery guys know me very well), but the food is delicious. CASH ONLY!

Essentials

Great selection of natural and organic food. All of their produce is local and organic. It's a little on the small side but that's why it's nice to go to! It's a little pricier than other options.

This Whole Foods is a very popular destination for natural and organic foods. Go during off-peak hours if you can. Also, grab some of their prepared food and sit upstairs overlooking the park!

This block, known as the Fourth Arts Block (or "FAB") is home to many experimental theaters that are on the cutting edge of performance art, La Mama perhaps being the most famous. Other theaters nearby also offer more conventional plays and performances.

Sightseeing

Perhaps not my favorite street to walk down, but definitely one of the more famous ones in the East Village. Historically, St Marks was home to hippies and then punks, and you can still see evidence of that with the tattoo parlors, head shops, and other stores that cater to alternative lifestyles.
