The top places to eat in/near Mt. Ida

With scenic hiking trails, world-class mountain biking, and nearby Lake Ouachita and Hot Springs, Mt. Ida has an incredible variety of experiences available. But one experience that everyone does while they’re here is eat ;). Here are our favorites:
With country fare on the walls and country cooking on the plates, the Mt. Ida Café is Cracker Barrel before there was a Cracker Barrel. It’s been in the same family for generations, and they still adhere to the same formula that got them started: good food, good service, great value. If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it.

It’s always busy, and for good reason. Everything is cooked to order, hot and fresh. Craving something cold and refreshing? The ice cream options will not disappoint!

For fun, check out the reviews and count the superlatives. Seriously, this place is achieving legendary status as THE place to go for authentic Mexican fare. The food is fantastic and so are the portions. Recommendation: Hork down a Shorty Special then snooze away the subsequent food coma.

When gambling was king in Hot Springs, the Ohio Club was the stomping grounds for celebrities like Babe Ruth and Al Jolson as well as for notorious gangsters like Al Capone and Bugsy Siegel. Pull up to the bar, order a burger and an Old Fashioned, and ask about the escape tunnels that run under the street. Let the food and atmosphere transport you to another time and create a memory you won’t soon forget.

This doesn’t qualify as a restaurant, or even a half a restaurant. Still, we had to include it because every time we make the trip to Mt. Ida it’s one of the first stops we make. Go to the deli and order the fried chicken. It’s cheap. It’s greasy. And it’ll keep you coming back for more.

The Ouachita Trail is a 223-mile point-to-point hiking route that runs from Talimena State Park in Oklahoma to Pinnacle Mountain State Park near Little Rock, Arkansas. Right at the midpoint is a little town named Story, a short 10-minute drive from Mt. Ida. Hikers often stop at Story’s Bluebell Café and Country Store to replenish provisions and take a breather. Combining a grocery store, live music venue and de facto community center, all awash in legendary southern hospitality, the Bluebell Café and Country Store serves up a heartwarming atmosphere you won’t want to leave It also doesn’t hurt that it’s one of the best restaurants in the country (according to "the hiking life dot com). Bluebell came in at number 15 on their list of the “20 Best Restaurants on America’s Long Distance Hiking Trails.” It's the only restaurant in Arkansas to make the list, and one of only four from the South. Want simple? Grab a burger. As one raving fan succinctly puts it: “It’s the best burger in the country. Period.” Want more than a taste? Stop in on a Saturday night, keep the appetizers coming, and catch the music jamboree — it’s free! If you’re into mountain biking, Bluebell also offers a shuttle service to the Womble Trail. Listed as an IMBA Epic Ride, the Womble Trail is considered the mountain-bike jewel of the Ouachita Mountains. Not for nothing, you can also arrange for a shuttle service to/from the trails through The Grotto. If kayaking many of the great waterways is more your style, we’ll shuttle those as well!

Lakes and Rivers

About 20 minutes from the Grotto is Lake Ouachita. With over 40,000 acres to explore and very little shoreline development, this lake offers an experience like no other in the state. It’s Arkansas’s largest lake and one of the cleanest in the nation. Plus, with its funky spelling, it also one of the most mis-pronounced. The first time I tried to say it in public company, I was quietly – and politely – corrected: “Hun, it’s pronounced Wash-ah-taw.” Now I can say it with all the confidence of a Mt. Ida native. And now you can too. What’s more, with the tips below, you can get a head start on enjoying all this wonderful lake has to offer. 1. Guided kayaking. If you want the guided experience from someone who’s circumnavigated all 700 miles of Lake Ouachita’s shoreline, you can’t go wrong with Ouachita Kayak Tours. All tours are private and they’ll adapt to your pace and skill level (beginners are welcome). They’ll even show you the best places to snorkel! 2. Family-friendly fishing. For groups up to 6 including the kiddos, check out Family Fishing Trips. You’ll troll around in a 200-hp, 22-foot Blue Wave Classic, decked out with all the fish-finding/fish-catching equipment you’ll ever need. 3. Fishing for the Super Serious. The Fisher Davis Guide Service is only minutes away from the Grotto. Son of fishing hall of famer Mark Davis, Fisher Davis knows exactly where to go and delivers great results. Just check out the reviews! 4. Boat rentals. You can rent deck boats and pontoon boats at Aqua Fun Boat Rentals. Travel a few more miles east to Mountain Harbor Resort and the options expand to ski boats, party barges, fishing boats, kayaks, canoes and paddle boards. BTW: This is very charming area. You’ll pass some horse stables that offer riding; when you get to Mountain Harbor there’s a restaurant, marina and general store. 5. “I have a boat. Where can I put it in?” The closest boat ramp is at Twin Creek.

Beginners and experts alike will enjoy the Caddo. Class I and II rapids are frequent and help with much of the "paddling." In the late summer, you may have to do more of the paddling yourself, but generally, the Caddo delivers a pretty good float. In fact, it's one of the most consistent floating rivers in Arkansas. Plus, along the way you'll find several good swimming holes and places to fish!

Hiking and Mountain Biking

The Lake Ouachita Vista Trail (“LOViT”) is an unsurfaced hiking and mountain biking trail winding along the southern shore of Arkansas’ Lake Ouachita. Developed by volunteers in cooperation with the US Army Corps of Engineers and the US Forest Service, the trail (including spurs) extends about 45 miles along the shore, connecting private resorts and public campgrounds, including Ouachita Shores Resort, Shangri-La Resort, Mountain Harbor Resort, Crystal Springs Resort, Brady Mountain Resort, and Echo Canyon Resort before finally reaching its easternmost terminus at the Avery Recreation Area below Blakely Mountain Dam near Hot Springs, AR. Parking is provided at each trailhead. The trail rises 900 feet from the Denby trailhead to the top of Hickory Nut Mountain and then on to Little Bear Creek at the foot of Bear Mountain, where one enjoys another 1200 foot climb across Bear Mountain to Brady Mountain Resort, followed by a final 1000 foot climb across Brady Mountain. Hikers travel up, down, and along mountain slopes through mixed hardwood and pine forests opening up at several places to breathtaking views of Lake Ouachita. Beautiful displays of wildflowers and tumbling waterfalls await during spring and summer months.

Mineral Heaven

We’re located in the Ouachita Mountains, an area uniquely rich in naturally occurring quartz crystal veins. Near the Grotto, you’ll find three crystal mines within 15 minutes: Twin Creek Crystal Mine, Wegner Crystal Mine, and Avatar Crystal Mine. If you feel like driving a bit further, the Ron Coleman Mine pairs rock digging with zip lining. And then there’s Crater of Diamonds State Park, the world’s eighth largest diamond-bearing volcanic crater. All locations allow you to search and dig for crystals and other minerals for a reasonable fee. Here are 6 pro tips that will help you get the most from your mining experience: 1. Wear old clothes: Long sleeved shirts, jeans, closed-toed shoes, and gloves are recommended. Digging involves working through red, iron-rich clay which will stain clothing, and the rocks themselves are often sharp. 2. Bring the right tools: You’ll want a hand shovel, screwdriver or three-pronged rake, and a bucket or burlap bag for the rocks you find. A brush will also come in handy. At the Grotto, we have buckets, shovels and rakes you can use. 3. You don’t always have to dig: At the mines you’ll find thousands of small crystals laying on the ground everywhere — pick up the ones you like! 4. Cushions come in handy: You’ll spend a lot of time kneeling or sitting — bring a gardening cushion to make it easier. 5. Pretend you’re going to the beach: The sun gets hot (this is Arkansas after all) — bring a cooler with icy beverages and a small beach umbrella to give yourself some shade. 6. Cleaning is required: Most of the crystals you find will be covered with iron oxide, which is a rusty color. The mines will have oxalic acid and info on how to clean the crystals.
Open Fridays through Mondays, 9 AM - 4 PM. Both Phantom Cove and Tabby Circle have been improved and are fruitful to those who have the patience to dig. Find Jewelry Points, Clusters, Manganese-Inclusions, and numerous Quartz Crystals!
