The Clark County Courthouse has a rich history of well-known historical figures practicing law there. The most famous was Abraham Lincoln. He was a frequent visitor of Marshall during his circuit riding days and developed some lifelong friendships in the town. Col. William B. Archer was a member of the Illinois delegation to the 1856 Republican National Convention and addressed the group following Lincoln’s nomination for vice-president on the William C. Fremont ticket. Abraham Lincoln defended William D. Davis at Clark County Courthouse in Marshall on July 1st and 2nd in 1850.

Historical Landmark: Guinnip Well is on the property
It is said that Abraham Lincoln possibly drank water from this well. It is located next to Clarksville Road right before the I-70 overpass.
