Mid-City is a neighborhood designated as a historic district on the National Register, with much of its architecture dating back to the late 1800s to early 1900s. While the area gets less attention from tourists than, say, the French Quarter and Bourbon St, make no mistake: Mid-City is where the locals like to experience New Orleans. You’ll find everything there from globally-inspired cuisine to off-the-beaten-path activities and City Park offers many more family-friendly options. As the name suggests, it's also centrally located, making it easy to go anywhere within the city, including via the iconic street car!

Arguably one of the best tennis complexes in the state, the City Park Tennis Center offers 26 lighted courts (16 hard courts, 10 clay courts), a practice court with two backboards, lockers and showers for players. The award-winning facility hosts the annual Allstate Sugar Bowl Tennis Classic, multiple state and regional tournaments and summer clinics for kids. USPTA/PTR-certified teaching pros are available for lessons.

Look into Blue Bikes
Nola's bike rental program is a great, cheap way to get around, in and out of City Park, all the way to the French Quarter via the Lafitte Greenway. If you're feeling adventurous, the bike trail along Bayou St John (a nice ride on its own) connects to a much larger trail that borders Lake Pontchartrain, for a full day excursion!

Stanley Grey playground is a great way to tire out the kids!
There are multiple public playgrounds in the area, especially along Lafitte Greenway, but Stanley Grey is the closest, located inside the park, 5mn walking from the house. It also happens to be right next to Café du Monde!

A unique way to explore nearby Bayou St John is by renting kayaks (single or double available). It's a great off-the-beaten-path way to soak in the sun, enjoy the wildlife, spot some gorgeous traditional houses or just get a good workout.

The streetcar is more than a tourist attraction
The streetcar is a bit like taking the scenic route: you better not be in a hurry but it will still take you places, including the French Quarter. It's also dirty cheap: the fare is $1.25 and there are all-day passes options. If you're on a budget and don't care to bike, it's hard to beat! One caveat: cash payment is exact change only... save yourself the trouble and download the RTA gomobile app to pay instantly from your phone.
