Beaches

There are many beautiful beaches to be found in the area. Here you will find information about the most popular ones as well as my personal favourites.
When I was a little girl growing up in Owen Sound I spent many summer days at Kelso Beach Park. It has everything a family could ask for like beach front, waking trails, splash pad, picnic shelter, soccer field, and an abundance of wildlife. When a little house came up for sale a five minute walk from Kelso Beach Park, I bought it! A few days after moving in I was out on my back deck and I realized that I could hear the familiar sounds of folk music floating on the wind from the annual Summerfolk festival at Kelso. Take a walk down to Kelso by walking south on 4th Ave West and make a right onto 18th Street West and then walk straight for five minutes and you are there.

Sauble Beach is the largest fresh water beach in the world. A short 15-20 minute drive from our place. I have always loved the warm soft sand, the warm water and wonderful waves to splash and play in. There are places to shop and other cool things to do at the beach. Adult climbing equipment, arcade, wind surfing, boating. It’s just a lot of fun!

Lions Head is a small town about one hour north of Owen Sound on the Bruce Penninsula. It has the most beautiful clear and clean turquoise water. A little beach with a beautiful view of towering rocky cliffs just off in the distance. Look closely, can you see the one shaped like a Lion’s Head? In the sunset the cliffs shine in a warm caramel glow. There is a dark sky policy so that you can have a look at the stars through the observatory. Don’t miss this hidden gem, and be sure to visit Rachel’s 50’s diner, or venture up the old creeky wooden stairs inside the never changing grocery store. See what treasures you can find and what history you will uncover up there. This town is truly one of a kind with a closely knit little community of families who are content with the stillness of the water and nothing but the sound of crickets in the night. Where generations of simple small town folks have shared a laugh at the local breakfast diner. If you stay long enough you just might sample a traditional family recipe or two. Head over to Mom’s famous pizza for the best homemade pizza in the world. Head over to Lions Head and visit my favourite place on earth.

Waterfalls

Inglis Falls is the best waterfall in the area. It will take your breath away. An 18 metre high cascade of water where the Sydenham river crashes over the Niagara escarpment. When my father dropped my sister of at her piano lesson when I was 10 years old, he used to ask me “where do you want to go?” To kill an hour until she was done. “Inglis Falls” I would say. Since it was only 5 minutes away. But, even if I had to plan a trip for a day and drive for hours, I would still go. To stand on the observation platforms and watch the people brave enough to swim in the canyon below. Sometimes you can park a ways down and hike your way up to the view of the falls and Owen Sound. If your up to it, you can hike from Harrison Park. However you get there, and no matter how much time you have to kill, go to this place. Take your children, your fiancé, your wife or husband and make sure that you take pictures you’ll never forget.

Trails

There are many hiking trails around Owen Sound. There is one for every nature lover out there. I did my best to round up some of the best.

Sightseeing

This tower is not for the person who doesn’t like heights. Or maybe it is, if you would like to try to overcome your fear. Climb this old tower on the spiral staircase up and up and up until finally...the view. Oh and what a view.

Parks

This is a giant park inside the city. There is plenty of children’s play equipment for children to play on, a river, paddle boats, mini golf course, bird sanctuary and finch cages, walking trails, tennis courts, swimming pool, restaurant with a window for junk foods like fries and ice cream. There is a picnic shelter and many places to just sit and relax including a historical band stand. Harrison Park is unbelievably beautiful. Behind the swimming pool there is a walking trail that leads to a waterfall in the woods. One of the most peaceful places you will ever enter. With a clear crystal stream and moss covered rocks. Write your name on the fallen tree and see if you can find the heart that says “Lily & Meir.”
