Sightseeing

You can walk, go jogging, bike, or drive to Tuís... and follow the winding road to Grano de Oro, the foothills of The Talamanca Mountain region where the local Costa Rican “natives” still out number the Ticos, Gringos, residents and Tourists combined!

Walk across the new bridge, up the hill, and in 5 minutes you’ll see a delicious delightful seen of the Turrialba Valley and The Volcano 🌋 too! Or drive to and through Turrialba, up through Santa Rosa Neighborhood, then enjoy Santa Cruz de Turri on up the VOLCANO 🌋 —but watch/read the SIGNS: Warning of very active gases and more tossed up unto the stratosphere from one of the most Active Members of the Costa Rican “Chain of Fireworks💥CC,

Most amazing “Pre-Colombian archeological ruins” of an ancient “Former City” in Costa Rica! Well worth a visit, a picnic lunch, hiking, and discovering the wonders of a cultured civilization long before the arrival of the “Barbaric Europeans”?!?

A MUST SEE! Spend a day, two, weeks! Too much going on to mention here! Go on line—check out the Botanical Gardens, The Seed Bank, a lakeside picnic area—that had 12-18 foot Crocodiles discovered when they drained & cleaned it a while back... Look for the damage in the main Admin Building from the 7.4 Earthquake (that killed 58+ people) when I was still teaching English there, 1991.

Interesting fact: most of the water no longer flows through the little canyon where the World White-Water-Rafting Championships were held— only 5%, a trickled goes there today; most of it now goes through a huge tunnel “bored thru a solid rock mountain”, to produce Electricity for the entire Province and beyond...

Food scene

The town is mostly one street wide, has a bank, schools, Churches, Grocery, Hardware, Variety, and Home Appliances Stores... and a few Restaurants and Bars! Only 4-5 minutes in car or taxi service, 10-15 minutes on a bicycle going there, (20-30+ minutes to return home, after dinner, shopping, and a few beers?) Or walk/hike down in 30-35 minutes, catch a ride or a taxi “back up the hill to home”?

Lots to see, explore, investigate, enjoy... good food, too! The “Professors’ CATIE Club” is up on the hill, to your right, better food than the “Cafeteria”, a swimming pool, outdoor seating, wine, beer, and spirits...

This is the local Catholic Church in our Village—it’s 250 meters (yards?) before arriving home, in Casa de Harlan, on the road that forks to the left by the fútbol plaza, the “Camino a Las Nubes”. Home is the last house on the lest, just prior to crossing the new bridge over “Delgado Creek”...

The little Town up river from La Selva has a grocery store, a bar or two, a bakery of sorts, and the end of the regular bus line... to take a bus 🚌 further East, to Grano de Oro, be prepared to complete with many indigenous people whose only means of transportation are these buses, cargo trucks, or feet.

Ticos don’t usually “add in a higher than expected price.”

Ask the price, pay it! Buy several items, perhaps a small discount. Don’t try to barter/beg/or “get a deal”...
