The Abbey of San Michele Arcangelo stands as the spiritual and cultural nucleus of Terra Murata village, tracing its Benedictine roots back to the 11th century. Despite facing destruction and subsequent rebuilding through the ages, its present-day structure showcases the rich architectural heritage of the 1500s. This majestic abbey complex highlights its historical significance as an island's hub for religious and cultural pursuits. The architecture reveals a fascinating blend of various periods and changes, with the earliest sections dating back to the 15th century, supported by historical evidence of a monastery existing here as early as 1026. Regarded as one of the most esteemed and affluent churches in Southern Italy, the Abbey of San Michele Arcangelo offers more than just a church visit. It houses a unique permanent Nativity scene, predominantly featuring 18th-century Neapolitan craftsmen's wood and terracotta figures. An integral part of the tour is the prestigious Library, housing collections that begin in the 16th century, including the library's oldest tome, which dates to 1534. Visitors are welcomed with free admission, encouraged to donate as they wish.

L’imponente complesso abbaziale testimonia il ruolo che aveva in passato quale centro religioso e culturale dell’isola. Dal punto di vista architettonico, è un impianto costituito da molteplici stratificazioni e trasformazioni avvenute nel corso dei secoli; la parte più antica risale al XV secolo sebbene esistono tracce storiche del 1026 che attesta l’esistenza di un monastero in questo stesso luogo. L’Abbazia di San Michele Arcangelo è tra le chiese più prestigiose e ricche del meridione d’Italia.
