LOCH LEVEN THE HERITAGE TRAIL This level circuit follows a cycle path right around the Loch Leven National Nature Reserve. The route takes you to many beautiful spots on the lochside and through varied woods and marshland, and is particularly renowned for its birdlife. There are several opportunities for cafe stops along the way.

There are seven islands on the loch, the largest being St Serf's Inch. Loch Leven Castle, where Mary, Queen of Scots was imprisoned in 1567, lies on one of these islands, and it can be reached by a ferry operated from Kinross by Historic Environment Scotland during the summer months. The distance between Leven and Loch Leven Castle is 15 miles. The road distance is 22.2 miles. NatureScot describe Loch Leven as "one of Scotland's top natural assets", due to its rich ecosystem that supports many different species of plants, insects, fish and birds.[4] It is of particular significance to migrating birds, who use it as a stopover when flying between their breeding and wintering grounds, due to its lowland location, shallow nutrient rich waters, large water surface, and islands (which provide safe nesting sites).[5] Loch Leven holds numerous national and international conservation designations, including being a national nature reserve (NNR). But the island stronghold is best known as the place where Mary Queen of Scots was held prisoner for almost a year. Some who took the boat across Loch Leven came of their own free will, including Robert the Bruce in 1313 and 1323

Loch Leven is a beautiful loch with so many different views all around it. It is also one of Scotlands national nature Reserves and a visit to Vane Farm which is on other side of the Loch. You can walk all the way round - it is 13.9 miles.

A beautiful setting with Loch Leven Castle accessible by boat recreating where Mary Queen of Scots was imprisoned in 1567 and escaped in May 1568.

“Ben Vrackie is on your doorstep. The Ben is a popular, wonderful outdoor place for experienced hillwalkers and beginners alike. The Ben is “only” 841m (2,757ft) high, so it’s not a Munro, but it still needs to be taken seriously. You'll need to be properly equipped for a hill walk (sensible hiking shoes, windproof jacket) and it will take you 3-4 hours for this walk.  Its only 13km there and back but the climb makes it feel much further. The marked footpath starts from the Ben Vrackie car park, although you can easily walk all the way from Wee Blue Dream, past the Black Castle, the Moulin Inn, through woodland beside a small gorge, then using a moorland track over heather moorland. The Ben Vrackie path is relatively easy until you reach Loch a’Choire which is a great walk in itself.  From here, the path gets much steeper and the last hour or so is quite hard work. But you will be rewarded on reaching on the top of mountain with stunning views and scenery surrounding mountain. On a clear day, you can see all the way west to the summit of Ben Nevis, Scotland’s highest mountain.”
