Giant City State Park is a must see. The park is free to visitors. There are many hiking trails, bluffs, rock climbing, observatory tower, visitor center and a lodge (know for their fried chicken!) There is so much to see, you won't be disappointed.
This is one of my favorite parks in the USA. If you love water, cliffs, hiking trails, and camping, do yourself a favor and check this place out.
Just a short drive will get you to Giant City State Park, located within the Shawnee National Forest where there are plenty of hiking and bridle paths, rock rappelling, picnic areas and a grand view from the observatory deck of the Giant City State Park water tower. The Giant City Lodge Restaurant is famous for their all-you-can-eat family style fried chicken dinners. For a quick and nearby hike, visit the Marberry Arboretum just up the street on South Wall and Pleasant Hill Rd. Across Wall street one will find jogging paths on the SIU campus.
