Pilot Mountain is only about 1.5 hours away from Chapel Hill and features the iconic mountain view. There are a variety of trails available here from the easiest walk from the parking lot to view the mountain to hiking up and around the mountain itself.

Pilot Mountain is the easiest mountain hiking to access from Winston-Salem, just a half hour drive away up US-52 N. The park surrounds the Pilot Mountain bald, where you can watch rock climbers do their thing. Hikes range from easy to strenuous, so you can pick according to your level of ability or interest, or simply drive to the top and enjoy the view. You can also visit nearby Mt. Airy, birthplace of Andy Griffith, and the inspiration for Mayberry and the Andy Griffith Show. It's fun... like stepping back in time.
