Governors Island

Tucked away on Governors Island is a charming but deserted WWII-era movie theater left over from when the island was a military base. I used to wander in here as a kid on summer days. The theater has a cute little box office in front, and in its heyday you could see a double feature for $2. It’s not operational, but you can go in at your own risk. Free ferries leave from South Street in Manhattan and from Brooklyn Bridge Park every 30 to 60 minutes.

Take a lovely ferry ride from Red Hook and spend the day in this recreational island! There are food trucks, multiple playgrounds, lovely walks, a farm, grassy lawns for picnics, and amazing views!

We love going to Governor's Island. It's an island between Manhattan and Brooklyn. Get there by (free) ferry from Brooklyn Bridge Park. Once on the island, walk on the perimeter for great view of Manhattan. Rent bikes. Check out the old coast guard buildings. Almost always, there are cool arts things (live music, exhibits, etc.). It's a great thing to do with kids -- but it's fun just-for-grown-ups too. It used to just be open in the Summer, but it's open year-round now. Google it and confirm it's open -- and check out if there are any activities going on there.
