Guadalupe Mountains National Park is in the vast Chihuahuan Desert of western Texas. It’s known for its bright-white Salt Basin Dunes, wildlife-rich grassland and fossilized reef mountains. The Guadalupe Peak Trail weaves up through a conifer forest to the state’s highest summit, with views of the rocky El Capitan peak to the south. In the north, the McKittrick Canyon Trail is known for its colorful fall foliage.

Great for a hike. Beautiful fall colors. Bring a picnic because there are no services in the park or anywhere nearby.

Located less than two hours from El Paso, this national park is positioned within the vast Chihuahuan Desert and is home to the highest peak in Texas. Standing tall at 8,749 feet in elevation, Guadalupe Peak offers an impressive view. The climb to the peak is a zigzagging maze of steep switchbacks and rugged terrain often described as a “hiker’s dream.” In addition to its more than 80 miles of trail, the park is the world’s most premiere example of a fossil reef and one of the most pristine wilderness areas in the region. This hidden gem allows for birding, hiking, camping and backpacking.

This is accessible from Dell Valley. Salt Basin Dunes was within what was called the East Pasture of a local family’s ranch. Now a part of the Guadalupe Mountains National Park. It’s an easy trip and fun to play in the pristine white sands at the foot of the mountain. Easy for grownups and kids alike.
