Can you find a strange animal in a bas-relief up in one of the arches facing Via dei Mercanti? Search for it! Someone says it's the proof of the celtic origin of Milano. It looks like a board sitting on its hind legs. Piazza Mercanti is a picturesque square just a stone's thrown away from the Duomo. Its square does seem to throw you back to the Middle Ages.

All eyes might be drawn to the iconic Duomo across the street, but take a closer look at Piazza dei Mercanti and you’ll see it’s full of treasures, including the Gothic-style Loggia, dating from the 14th century.

Don't miss this wonderful little piazza! Sometimes overlooked as it is hidden by the shops and the magnificent Duomo, but definitely well worth the visit.

That's where you can see the architecture of the XIII, XIV and XV centuries! Perhaps that's why the spirit of ancient Italy still reigns here, attracting travelers.

The center of Milan during middle age. Center of commerces as you can guess from streets names: via Orefici (goldsmith), via Spadari (sword)... Palazzo della Ragione was home of Teresian Land Registry
