Recommended for a day trip if you want to visit some of the smaller, beautiful towns outside the capital area. Don't miss Stykkishólmur, Ólafsvík, Arnarstapi and Grundarfjörður (Kirkjufell in Grundarfjörður is one of the most beautiful mountains in Iceland).
One of my favorite places to visit for a day trip or over a weekend. Short 1,5 hour drive away from the capital is the Snæfellsnes Peninsula with geothermal hot springs, Snæfells glacier, lava caves, beautiful beaches and so much more.
It is wonderful to take a round trip around the Snaefellsnes Peninsula and explore all the natural beauty it has to offer. The drive is worth it and you could do it in 1 day.
It is spectacular driving around the peninsula. On a clear day the views will stay with you forever! Yes, forever!
The peninsula is one of the most extraordinary places in Iceland, with beautiful stony beaches, Snæfellsjökull glacier, natural swimming pool, great bird life, beautiful Stykkishólmur village where you can take a boat ride to see some of the countless islands in the Breiðafjörður fjord.

“Not for the beginner or the weak at heart, this hours-long hiking path up to Glymur waterfall at the top is invigorating but also a little dangerous at points. Cross the river over a wooden log, step through giant caves and climb the mountain with ropes, just be careful, as any slip or daring too close to the cliff won´t end in a happy tourist story.. Surprisingly, this has become sort of a hiker´s Disneyland lately! ”
