Soon after Thessaloniki was founded in 315 BC, the town was surrounded by defensive walls to withstand attacks by King Pyrrhus of Epirus in 285 and by the Celts in 279.

Until the 19th century the old town was surrounded by a complete eight km long circuit walls.Unfortunately,the Ottoman goverment pulled down the ancient walls to modernize and beautify in their opinion the town.However recently the walls have been restored in sections.
