This is amazing. You can bike/hike from downtown New Paltz all the way to the Mohonk Mountain House and beyond. But for a good start take this trail (or head the other direction to Poughkeepsie if you prefer)

Excellent new trail that runs from downtown New Paltz up to the Shawangunk Ridge. Hiking and Biking. Seasonal bike hire from the Springtown road car park.

You walk along the edge of pastures so that you have a constant view of the Gunks—no trees to obscure anything. It helps to put our lives in perspective--people become little specks in the distance. You can almost imagine yourself in England on the moors.

A gorgeous 5-mile path created by the Open Space Institute to connect the rail trail system to the Mohonk Preserve. Guests can come from New Paltz, or can park in one of the parking lots located on the path.
