its the only part of our national collection, outside of Dublin. A must see when touring Ireland. The County Life collection explain that land, traditional and the circle of life in Ireland from the famine to the 1950's.Turlough Round Tower is just across the road.

“This is the place that I find most fascinating in Co Mayo, explaining the fascinating story of the people who inhabited Ireland more than 5000 years ago. Their homes, fields and history are all there underneath the bog, so they were there before the bog changed the face of Ireland, they were there when Ireland was covered with ancient forests. So what changed and why? A visit to this fascinating place is a must!l”

“Closest National park/visitor centre (50mins drive) This is ideal for experienced walkers looking for a challenge, & complete wilderness ! It is one of the largest national parks. There is now a free bus service !!! so that You could walk all day accross to another side of the park and get a return bus back to the visitor centre. (Full details on their website)”

“The best 5 km + walk or run in town. Walk or drive over to the Connaught Whisky Distillery and park your car there. It’s a straight walk there and back and that’s over 5K but if your up for a challenge follow the signs in the woods for the different trails on the way. ”
