Two of the most famous 14ers in Colorado, Grays and Torreys. Don't take hiking at this high elevation too lightly. You should be prepared with plenty of food and water.

These two 14,000 foot peaks can be summited in the same day! Expect this adventure to take at least 8 hours, and PLEASE do your research ahead of time to ensure you are prepared mentally, physically, and in terms of the right gear. Visit 14ers.com for more information.

Distance: 8.5 Miles Elevation: 14,270' and 14,267' Difficulty: Difficult About an hour away from Winter Park, hikers can climb the 9th and 11th highest peaks in Colorado. Grays and Torreys Peaks are considered easy 14ers in Colorado; however the hike is still rated as difficult. The hike begins at the Grays Peak Trailhead and passes streams and wildflowers from the start. Once you’ve reached the first 14er, there is a 500-foot drop along the saddle between Grays and Torreys. Rated as class 2, Torreys is the sharper peak and slightly more difficult to hike. With breathtaking panoramic views and a close proximity to Winter Park, these Colorado 14ers are some of the more popular ones in the state.

This hike will give you incredible views of the Front Range, and knock out two 14ers in one swoop. A 4WD and ground clearance equipped vehicle are needed to access the trailhead, though 2WD with ground clearance may be alright ( I would not recommend it, it gets dicey). Regardless, sedans will have to hang back in the dirt parking area on Barkerville Rd. and walk to the trailhead. This is a heavily trafficked hike in the Summer. Winter hikers will require traction gear, poles, an axe, and will be adding about 3 miles because the road to the trailhead is closed. Snow begins to pile up here in early October, so just keep that in mind. (8.1 miles, out and back, difficult, elev. gain 3,622 ft)

A popular 14er where you can get 2 14,000+ foot peaks in one day. 14ers are very challenging and altitude sickness should not be taken lightly. Be sure to read about the challenges you face... a quick google search can help you prepare to make sure you enjoy the hike. The weather changes rapidly in the mountains and you should be prepared for a variety of weather conditions. 14ers require you to arrive very early (3 or 4am?) and commit several hours of your day.
