The "Ara Pacis" museum is the first architectural work built in the historic center of Rome from the fall of fascism to the present day. Previously the Ara Pacis was enclosed within a structure known as the "Teca del Morpurgo" (named after its creator, the architect Vittorio Ballio Morpurgo), built in 1938 (for details see "History of the Ara Pacis" ). Designed by architect Richard Meier, the current museum complex was inaugurated and opened to the public after seven years of construction, on April 21, 2006 (on the occasion of the Christmas in Rome).

The Ara Pacis Augustae (Augustus Altar of Peace) is an altar built by Augustus in 9 BC. to Peace in the sense of divinity. Originally located in an area of the Campus Martius consecrated to the celebration of victories, the place was emblematic because it is located one Roman mile (1,472 m) from the pomerium, the limit of the city where the consul returning from a military expedition lost the relative powers ( imperium militiae) and regained possession of its civil powers (imperium domi). This monument represents one of the most significant surviving testimonies of Augustan art and is intended to symbolize the peace and prosperity achieved as a result of the Pax Romana.

Octavianus Augustus brought to Rome a time of peace and prosperity after long and severe civil wars. To celebrate peace (and to glorify himself) he built an altar. Do you know that it still exists? is in this museum (not nice if you see it from outside, for me) but often hosts some really important exhibitions!

Western elevation of the Ara Pacis towards the Campo Marzio It is with these words that Augustus in the Res Gestae, his spiritual testament, handed down to us the will of the Senate to build an altar to Peace, following the undertakings he completed north of the Alps between 16 and 13 BC, including the subjugation of the Reti and the Vindelici, the definitive control of the Alpine passes, the visit to Spain finally pacified, the foundation of new colonies and the imposition of new taxes. The dedicatio of the Ara Pacis, its inauguration, took place on January 30, 9 BC. It seems, according to the testimony of the historian Cassio Dione (LIV, 25.3), that at first the Senate had proposed to build the altar within its own seat, the Curia, but the idea was not followed up and was preferred the northern Campo Marzio, recently urbanized. The altar dedicated to peace thus came to be found, not by chance, at the center of the vast plateau on which traditionally the maneuvers of the army, cavalry and, more recently, the gymnastic exercises of the Roman youth took place.
