Turn off Inland Road onto Ramp Road. The lake water is stained from the peat and tannins in the earth, resembling the colour of coca cola - hence it's common name. The lake is a popular swimming spot and the local Maori believe it has healing properties. Ramp Road will also get you to the far end of Tokerau Beach.

After a big day at Maitai Bay or Tokerau beach , it is great to wash off the salt in the cool fresh water lake behind Tokerau. The water is coca cola coloured, and gives you an instant tan. Nice private ish picnic area here too. A hidden gem!

If you crave a little fresh water to swim in, check this place out. True to it's name, the colour is very similar to coca cola due to peat. You can access via the beach or take a short drive down Ramp Road.

The peat and tannins in the water of this lake give it a distinct 'Coca Cola' colour. The surrounding catchment is manuka scrub, with pohutukawa, cabbage tree and flax along the eastern margin. The lake has no inflows or outflows. Access is off Ramp Road, with well-formed tracks to the western and northern shore. There is also an access road to the beach from the turn off to the Lake. You can drive along the beach to Tokerau itself but beware of fishermen's long lines and it best to keep as high up the beach as possible when passing fishermen on the beach.
