Established in 1960, this is the oldest bookstore specializing in books by and about black people in the country. The Oakland spot opened in 1976. It’s a center for black history and culture, and has played its own role too; the Black Panthers would meet there and hold lectures, and so have many writers, including Amiri Baraka and Ishmael Reed. Check their website for readings and other author events.
The oldest African American themed bookstore in the country. They carry a wide variety of books from cooking to children's books, fiction & nonfiction. Support a local bookstore!
